Bit Scared!

Husband and I have just made the decision to sell up, and travel Oz, but now I'm a bit worried about everything!

How do you get rid of a lifetime of possessions quickly, how do you know where to go first, how does someone who has never even backed a trailer deal with a caravan?

How long does this feeling last, and how do I make it go away?

Welcome to the gang Danielle, enjoy here and out in the playground.

I did just what you are saying during the last half of 2014 so know how you feel.

I just took the plunge in the deep end, literally got RID of everything that couldn't fit in the Tug or the Den, nothing in storage. Now my house is my Van and everything I decided to keep is with me and all that is left.

I have great memories and unless Uncle Al takes over completely that is all I need really. My two daughters are both happy if I'm happy. As long as I can see my two daughters from time to time and my grandchildren I'm a happy camper.

I love my new lifestyle, Den and Tug.

Whatever you do enjoy and keep safe.

Hi Danielle and welcome to the forum , It is a big plunge that we take when we decide to sell up everything and everyone goes through that same feeling that you are going through. WE brought a M/H and live in it full time but didn't sell our family home ,instead we opted to rent it out fully furnished and are quiet happy with this arrangement.

Hi Danielle I to once felt like you, and realized if I had made up my mind to sell my home and everything I've worked hard for all these years then I should have no reservations about selling.  So I've kept my house and get out on the road when it calls me lol.  I have the gypsy in my soul, so I do get out on the road often.  For me it is alot of peace of mind knowing my home is always there for me to return to. All the best .....Kisha

So glad I'm not the only one that feels this way. Thanks very much for listening! I will probably use the forum a lot, when we do get on the road, as by then I will have more questions. Thanks!

Welcome from us too Danielle. Glad you came to this forum to ask. There are plenty of people who have done what you are contemplating so there will always be help. I'm beginning to think we all have too much 'stuff' and we don't have enough days to make use of it.

We did what you are contemplating about 8 mnths ago. We had intended to do the permanent thing when we retired, but the company I worked for went belly up, all the staff were laid off and guess what - if youre older then 55 - most employers don't want you !!

So we decided to sell our house (getting sick of mowing lawns, painting, cleaning the pool, doing the gardens and the list goes on) and we had about 4 garage sales. All our expensive furniture somehow ended up in our kids homes lol, but we now use their homes as our bases and store some of our stuff there. We got rid of all the furniture, scanned all our pics onto hard drive.

Then we sold our two cars and bought one just for towing and a new caravan. Took them home, put in what we thought we wanted, had another throw-out of un-needed clothing (reckon we filled up almost 2 clothes recycling bins even after the garage sales.

Off we went on 4 mnths around our home State, WA. The biggest shock is realizing that you control time - not the other way round. You decide when you get up in the morning, what youre going to do that day, how much time you will spend there and when you've had enough - move on.

We have solar power, carry spare water which keeps us going for a week (with a shower each day and using the washing machine), TV, satellite dish (sadly, but wifes weakness), E-Books, a big fridge/freezer (critical) and our 5 o'clock drink supplies.

We have been back at our sons place for the past 3 months and about to set off again in a couple of weeks heading for SA, NSW, VIC and QLD. If we do all this in one hit - we may change our minds - the joy of being gypsies. If we carry on, then we'll be back in Perth later in the year.

Who knows, life is great. We're glad we were kind of forced into this and took the plunge before we retired and are young enough to walk the tracks, the white sane beaches and wander about the local towns.

The only downside is our clothes have all shrunk (or have we put on weight from the good life LOL)
