If you like Bore water with high mineral contenr then yes there are some Rain Water tanks along the way that are pretty old, I'd only use them for washing.  As for buying water, consider getting a water filter & connect it to a town water supply to fill your tanks, it will pay for itself in no time.

I have a Stafani single canister that I've hooked up to some hose fittings with drinking grade hose and made it portable so can fit to almost any town supply tap. This cost me about $60 to set up plus the cartridge.  The secret though is in the cartridge mine is a Sub-micron Perform 0.2pm 107 which are about $50 from bunnings and I replace it every 6 months.  It's the highest grade filtration, Perth water is pretty crappy with a strong chlorine smell and is about the worst on taste that we've experienced, but, through this filter tastes like fresh rain water.

Been in some country areas where the water hasn't been that great, but through the filter its like "its raining again".

Need to point out though, we have a separate tank for drinking water (20lt) and we use the main tank for washing. We only use the filter for the drinking water and now wouldn't leave home without it.

Thanks . I like the idea of the portable  one will look into that.

I had heard that the water was pretty crap over that way.

This is my Stafani Filter, the fittings I got from the Irragation Section in Bunnings needed where:

2  of 19mm Thread fitting with a 13mm Barbed end (black Poly)

Some Drinking Grade Hose

2 of 16mm S/Steel Hose Clamps

A Click On hose fitting

A Screw On fitting for a Tap, a standard thing with an adapter for different size taps.

I also used some plumbing thread tape around the Poly fittings into the catridge just in case and got my self a 4 way Security Tap spanner for those council taps that don't have tap handles which cost about $10.  As saide before I can now get water from any available town water supply.

We drank the town water that was available in most places in WA. Yes is it a bit mineral-ish but the people who live there drink it. It makes us grateful to be home on the east coast with river-water as town supply.

Hi Paul, how's this....

The Canister: http://www.bunnings.com.au/filter-undercounter-stefani-ucfa_p5090102

The Fliter Cartridge: http://www.bunnings.com.au/filter-water-stefani-sub-micron-perform-0-2pm-107_p5090025

The Hose Fittings: Note you can buy these in singles http://www.bunnings.com.au/pope-13-x-20mm-male-directors-5-pack_p3130435

With the water hose don't get the blue hose like it did because it kinks too much, get the reinforced type that is drink water quality,  that will be my next upgrade SOON!.

Hope this helps

Regards Steve

Nah, I pinched the idea from a mate I just use the best filters he just uses the cheap ones.  We got water from the same tap once and did a taste test, mine was vastly better but my mate's attitude was "yeah mine's still drinkable and the filters are quarter of the price".  I just said "I'll stick with my filter, I'll rather pay more to get better water"

Why would you buy water for the dogs? They will drink anything. You will be wasting money by pampering to them, they don't really appreciate you doing things like that. Watch "The Checkout" on ABC @ 8 PM tomorrow. Take note of "the guilty mum" segment, her actions are a bit like providing "special" diets and things for dogs.

Peter gave one of my dogs water from a tap at a service station on Kangaroo island after that had an emergency run to the vet nearly lost the dog his stomach lining nearly gone turns out the desalinated water and high chlorine content to much for him, he did survive but after the vet bill and the scare i am particularly careful of what i let my dogs drink. Usually buy some bottled water or container water from a supermarket if i am crossing areas that are a bit dry as back up and they are easy to carry.

All sounds a little oddWestcoast.

I have lived in SA all of my life and never heard of anything remotely like your experience, South Australian water may have had problems many years ago, nowadays it is fine.

We have been traveling with dogs for 40 odd years, as far as water is concerned, they drink what we do, if its good enough for us its certainly good enough for the dog, never had a problem.

As a matter of interest KI is hardly on the way to WA from NSW.wink

Ah yes santa, that was natural bore water which is relatively safe. Desalinated water can upset stomachs if it is not done right. A friend was on a ships sea trial. He was suffering constipation at the time. He mentioned it to the engineer who took some water straight from the distiller. A small glass worked wonders. When the desalination is done that way there must be around 2% sea water added to it to make it drinkable. Who knows how they handled the treatment on KI.

I too have not heard of straight bore water doing anything like that with dogs or humans.

Yes it is Santa little bit off the beaten track which is why we went there, as to why the water was like it was should have known something was up as the collie cross we had with us as well wouldn't drink that water. Straight out of the tap near the bowsers no sign saying it wasn't fit or was anything out of the ordinary. I lived on cattle stations for a lot of years so bore water holds no fears for me or my pets, but the problem to me lies with not knowing, I find it easier if i sort it out.
