Hi there we have just bought a land cruiser wagon gxl towing capacity 3.5 ton we want to know are there other people towing vans that weigh 3 ton ? And when tanks R full with water weighs 3.3 ton so when we have pack up and ready to hit the road do others have this much weight and legal or would u go for a lighter van ?
It will always be hard to establish a "ballpark" figure for all the extra's one may carry around (clothes / food / full gas cylinders / all the stuff under the bed / in the tunnel boot etc.) But I have seen people suggest allowing an additional 300 to 400 kgs.
we have a tug that can tow 3.5T and just increased the ATM on our 'van to 3T.
The Department of Transport inspector commented that most 'vans on the road are overweight and the vehicles towing them are underspec'd for that weight.
Watch and see how many of the smaller Prados (which Mum uses to take the 4 kids to school usually) pulling along a 20ft van with bikes and kyaks and god knows what else on board (not forgetting the dog, the 4 kids and mum and dad).
Manufacturers under rate their vehicles (especially motor homes) so keep the rego licensing costs down and so those that only have a "car" type class license can buy them. There is another post on this thread which is only a few days old on this subject.
Remember that 1 litre of water = 1 kg in weight - fill you water tanks and gas bottles up and most RV's don't have a lot of leeway for food and clothing
After all that depressing news though, welcome to being a Nomad - you will love it !!!
