remote email - internet contact

Hello all, I am a newby and preparing for a long trip next year.  Does anyone have solid information on accessing internet - email, telephone, etc, in remove areas, e.g. inland areas, not coastal; or where I should start my research.  thanks very much,

How,

Welcome to the gang rampet, enjoy here and out in the playground.

You will find Telstra is the pick of the bunch for both Internet and Phone anywhere really. They have the best cover but you will find blind spots all over the playground.

Check out mobile phones that have capability to attach a external antenna . You can also get wireless modems that you can also attach external Antenna.

There are Pre-paid set ups but I prefer to actually have a suitable plan for my needs. I am full time on the road and
need to be contactable as much as possible by family and friends. I have a gmail a/c so use that for emails etc and all works well for me. I also use a iPhone and iPad and again, all works well for me.

Others will have other ideas I'm sure.

Hi Doug,
thanks for that info. I have Samsung Galaxy 6 Telstra mobile; a netgear 4g Telstra broadband dongle. we have an antenna booster on the caravan. Trialled all in the country, (admittedly it was in the forest) , without success. Is a Telstra retail outlet the best place to get good advice on remote access, or should I be looking for some other retail outlet? do you know. much appreciated. Rampet.

How,

Ramet, I always like to go direct to the source of whatever I use so go to a Telstra Shop, IMO. If you are lucky to get a young knowledgable person there, you are home and hose. Hard to find though. I found a young guy in Shepparton VIC and what he didn't know, wasn't to be known. Use there "Techie" bar as well although you usually need to make an appointment first, same day service though.

Keep in mind, you will never get full cover everywhere, sometimes none, no matter who or what you use.

I have BOOST 40UNLTD for the phone (TELSTRA) and unfortunately still have some months to run on Optus mobile broadband.

You can go to Jaycar for an antenna for either your phone or WIFI but again if you are lucky and find somone who knows what he is talking about

If the antenna lead plugs into your dongle then that's about as good as it gets without going to satphone. Where exactly where you when you trialled it? Was anyone else able to get mobile phone connection?

Unless you go for satellite communications then you must expect to be have periods out of communication range. I have learnt to manage this and make sure I am in range when communications is vital. Use this interactive map to get an indication of when you are likely to be in range.
