WINDOWS 10

I was trolling around the net yesty...when this little segmented box appeared up in the right hand corner of my screen. I highlighted it and it said "Windows 10".. so I opened it .

It basically is an invitation to reserve a full version of Microsoft,s new system ...for free!!

I contacted my guru ...who informed me that Microsoft is making available ...for 12 months apparently...an update new system for those of us who are running 7 and 8....as far as he knew anyway.

He did say to err on the side of caution because it may be that there is no going back in case it turns out worse than what 8 was...and just sit on the offer for a while. He will definitely download it when he has more info onto 1 of his putas at least.

Anyone of the ,sperts on here got any ideas, more info etc????. Is it a forward move for the better..or a backward one??  Harder to use ..or easier??

Throwing this up for discussion folks....tell us anything/everything you may know about this please.....and it may be something to consider by Cindy to making it a sticky...

Cheers  Keith

I think this is pre the official release at end of july and is being done to help solve any faults before being finalised. The only issue I've heard about so far is the dreaded system freeze and the possible loss of current unsaved work. Look up some of the PC mags online they should have info or samples of the new OE. God bless, froggos

Some links on the subject:

Its the Windows you know, only better From Micro$oft.

Microsoft will offer Windows 10 for free in July From the Guardian, Oz edition.

Microsoft to deliver free upgrades to Windows 10 - from CNET

For those who have their hard disk in two partitions, one for the operating system and the other for their data plus an install copy of Win 7 or 8 you can go back to theses operating system if you don't like Win 10. You just format the C: drive and reinstall your original operating system. (We all have a separate drive for out data, don't we?)

Keith,

I manage a fleet of PCs (about 300 of them), and to date we have stayed on Windows 7, we have ignored Windows 8, and are waiting for the formal release of Windows 10.

When Windows 8 was in Beta testing we got involved and installed a few versions, and basically we wasted a lot of time debugging the system for Microsoft, only to work out that it was of no value to us anyway. We vowed then that we would wait for the full commercial release, as you have no idea how much of what you see will actually make it into the final version. On 8 they were even changing how the interface worked up to about a month before the final release.

Unless you have time to waste and the inclination to be a guinea pig, then I would wait for the release.

I would not bother with it until it appears on Pay4keys:

http://www.pay4key.org/

For work I use full Microsoft volume licencing, but for home use I find Pay4keys is a very useful to keep myself legal.

Were you visiting a Microsoft site at the time the box appeared? I'd be very suspicious of any unexpected/unsolicited box or window that suddenly appeared on the screen. One of the golden rules of online security is to never click on or open any link that you didn't specifically ask for. I'll be keeping an eye on Windows 10 and how it performs in the real world once it's released in July - if the free upgrades really are available for one year then there's no rush to dive in early.

Cheers, Joe

Wise words from the tech expert Baz.

Don't be an early adopter, the free upgrade is available for 12 months, take time to asses the OS before jumping in.smile

Hi smile

Well I am not a 'tech-head 'or computer nerd or ? just a user. So why would I want to change my operating system. confuseMine works OK, I am still learning how to use it after several years. AND every new Windows system has been a dog until they upgraded it or replaced it entirely.

So would I be interested in a free copy of Windows 10, not even if they paid me to use it. hmm

Don't let them scare you into changing just because they are likely to remove support, it will still work. It just means they will not give you support if you tell them you have a problem with it.

Personally I do not use Microsoft support so when they remove support it will make zero difference to me in my personal life (might affect me at work though).

Gday...

From all the information I can find on the release of WIN 10, it is being offered as a FREE upgrade for WIN 7, 8.1 for PCs now and also any other new 'device' from 29 July 15 for a period of 12 months.

Not sure how they will "make some more billions" with that initiative confuse

http://www.smh.com.au/digital-life/computers/microsoft-readies-windows-10-for-next-month-in-pc-tablet-push-20150601-ghegwi.html

It also says in that link - "The operating system will be available for PCs and tablets as a free upgrade to people using Windows 7 and Windows 8.1, or on new Windows 10 devices, Microsoft said in a statement on Monday. Windows 10 for other devices will be available later this year."

However, I certainly agree with the prudent advice to wait for a few months before downloading and upgrading to WIN 10 - in case of 'teething problems'

Cheers - John

Don't know why you are panicking, even Vista has a couple of years of support life left. See this link

Hi PeterD

With my download speed being a max of 200kb/s it would tale me a day or more to download

If my Win7 & PC  last to 2020, that makes me  92years old

I doubt that I'll be still using one.smile

 I will not be botheringbiggrin

Everyone with a windows operating system has used MS support to update their OS to fix vulnerabilities identified through things such as hacks as well as improving the OS's efficiency. Withdrawal of support does not mean you won't get support if you have a problem with the OS. It means that MS will no longer provide updates when weaknesses are identified which leaves your computer vulnerable to cyber attacks. Updates to applications may cease to work (particularly if you update them) because the OS is out of date. However, there is plenty of time toi renew your system as MS will be supporting systems for some time yet.

Regards

Dave

I'm not going to touch it....

Especially if it looks anything like 8....

And I can't see them dropping support for 7 as they carried XP so long....

I found all the comments above very interesting (well, at least most of them) and have extensively used every version of Windows since 2.1. What has always amused me is that computer techs are a strange breed, and they think that telling the average PC user that Windows XX was buggy, or whatever, somehow impresses the customer and gives them credibility. There is NO perfect OS, and I doubt if it's possible to create one. Apple manages to eliminate issues with driver and application software by wrapping themselves in an extremely restrictive (and expensive) environment. Windows - on the other hand - attempts to be everything to all people, but as much as MS tries to make it as stable as possible, it is subjected to an almost infinite variety of hardware environments and poorly written third party driver and application software which often don't enjoy each others company. I hasten to add I have spent many frustrating hours in the pursuit of solutions for these issues, but still resist bagging an operating system which has been such an amazing success - in spite of all the populist negative reviews in the trade magazines an online. I will personally welcome W10 and see how it goes. Yes, there will be some bugs which will come to light as time goes on but MS will progressively eliminate them with upgrades for years, and I'm quite happy with that. I also strongly support the concept of having a small HDD for Windows and separate HDDs for data - and regular backups (especially a system image).
Regards
Chris

Apple manages to eliminate issues with driver and application software by being a much more stable operating system.

Apple computers wrap themselves in very solid piece of aluminium casing and are very very well made so are a little more expensive but you get what you pay for.

The Apple operating system upgrades are, and have been for many years FREE, unlike the Windows ones where you still can't buy a 6 years old Windows 7 operating system for under about $120.

Not sure what the (restrictive) actually means so I won't comment on that one.

Cheers

Jon

This may or may not be true, regardless the name of the topic is "Re Windows 10" I see no reference to Apple.smile
