freecamping at Leonora WA, lovely clean town, friendly locals too,,,, right next to the open mine pit, toured the Hoover Mansion, had high tea, I have to tell you, IIts not my thing, only did it cause shekon made me do it, I spilt the coffee, guess I ain't no lady LOL, having a ball, been to Lake Ballard, Niagra Dam, will post eventually in my blog . happy travels . Hahaha, Frangipani, at least it was not me that spilt the coffee this time. I'll make you a lady yet! My dear, tomorrow we shall travel North in this wildest of lands and discover more joyful sights and pursuits. Please arrange for the sun bonnet and face screening as all young ladies should do.....biggrinbiggrin

The old gold mine (which is still in operation) is a full day wander around. It is a stand-out on site mine museum. Parts it are free and others a modest (I cant remember how much lol) charge. There is even a 24 hour free camp there.

Interesting the big house that Fran slopped her coffee at was built for the Mine Manager - Edgar J Hoover, who went on to become the only known cross dressing FBI director and US President. The house was built in the late 1800's and was fitted with full air con and central heating and they ran a separate power plant (powered by chopping down all the trees in the region) for the purpose as well as an Olympic sized swimming pool.

By comparison, the workers lived in tiny ramshackle shacks that you have to bend over to get into and walk around in and the corrugated walls were 3rd hand and full of holes. No air con or heating for them!

There are two pubs in Leonora and both have topless bar staff (sorry ladies - theyre female only). The laugh is they stand behind the bar in the tiniest of lacy panties and bra (4 postage stamps with frilly lace around the outside) and a large bottle top remover in the side of their panties (yep - the side). What is so funny is when they walk around into the bar and theyre wearing socks and runners. I nearly choked on my meal laughing at how funny it looked. These girls earn mega bucks and are FIFO to and from Perth.

Great town swimming pool - very new.

The CP in Leonora is good too. We stayed there a week and from memory it was less than $160 for 7 nights. Lots of permanents, but they're all quiet, clean and none are feral rejects like some CP permanents you see.

Sorry Bruce &Bev. The mine manager was Herbert Hoover,not J.Edgar Hoover(he was head of the FBI but was never President).

I offer the following regarding the Mr Herbert Hoover who was deeply involved in the Sons of Gwalia Mine, Leonora WA ... taking control of the mine in 1897.

He went on to be President of the USA (1929-1933)

Hi to both Johns. Good to see two guys who picked up on my mistake in confusing the 2 Hoovers. A mate here PM'd me a few days ago pointing it out. My weak excuse is as I get more geriatric, my learned knowledge is slowly leaking out my ears lol

Other than a vacuum cleaner, the name Hoover is surely not that common - we wondered if they two were related in any way.

Anyone know?

If you are tempted to go on to Wiluna (sealed) and thence to the west, the Meekatharra road can be pretty corrugated. A few times (with caravan) we have used the "Neds Corner" road, which goes NW from Wiluna and comes out on the main northern highway roughly half way between Newman and Meekatharra. Is usually reasonable dirt road. Tradies from the Kalgoorlie area, going to the mines up north, use it in preference to the Meeka road.

If heading north fromMt Magnet,don't stay in Meekathara. Go a little way north to Karalundi. It is a great little spot to stay and also support a great community
