re-filling water tank problem

Hi all and specially the techies

I am new to the forum and a newby MH owner.

On my Winnebago Esperance I have tried to re-fill my water tank (fast/slow/all taps open-closed/hot-cold/followed the very poor Winnebago manual). The max display I get is 30%. The knock on the tank confirms with hollow sound: not full!

can anybody out there give me some advice please?

Uge

G'day Uge and welcome to the forum

I recently had a similar problem. I found that there are vent outlets above the filler and that all my pipes we blocked with dirt and grunge due to lack of use. After cleaning with water and a bit of pool chlorine all works well now. I had to undo the clamps at the tanks and force water into them, once they were cleaned out I reconnected everything and bingo all fixed. Open the drains on the tanks to clear the grunge out.

I hope this is useful, If that doesn't clear it a caravan repairer may be you next step

Cheers

Sometimes water gets into the breather pipe so air can't escape from the tank as water enters it preventing more water entering. I purchased some plastic pipe from Bunnings that fits into the breather pipe and blow through it before starting to fill the tanks. Depending on how much water got into the breather pipe you may have to blow pretty hard. I have a Jayco caravan which are apparently notorious for getting water in the breather pipe and making filling the tanks difficult and this process has cured the problem.

G-Day Uge. Our son and crew have a trailer camper and they have to do the same as Gus1949

I tend to agree with all the above. I went one step further and made new breathers that couldn't be blocked by holding water. The breather should go either up or down, but not snake both up and down like Jayco ones.
However, If you decide that the breather isn't the problem, then we'll need a bit more information about the filler pipe.

One common problem is the mud wasp they build a mud nest behind the filler cap at the entrance to the air pipe , because of the problems these little burgers cause I had had to fix gauze to all air vents including aircon

Even when you have the breather tubes clean and clear you can get air locks in them after filling your tanks. Many of us have a short length op hose with the fitting pictured below on one end. You click this onto the water filling hose and stick th free end down into the filling hose through the water inlet. Thistank filler.PNG is enough to blow the breather tubes clear.

Just an update on this, I had to re route the filler hose inside the cupboard and created a very slow fill process.Couldnt get the normal 1/2'" hose far enough into filler and created an almost airtight fit. I then found some 10mm or 3/8" clear vinyl tube, less than 0.5 metre needed, so dont go to the funny green shed as they want you to buy 5 metre prepack at outrageous price. Try an independent irrigation outlet. $0.85 cents per metre. You will need a 13mm to 10mm joiner. Philmac HJ1210 is an example. Bit smaller tube then fits easily and doesnt restrict the flow very much. Another nice touch is to put a "greenback ' tap which allows flow adjust, or OFF to change tanks, or to check tank level.
