Tow hitch tolerance

Hi All

Should the tow ball be a tight fit in the female receiver or should it be able to move. The vertical movement can be reduced or eliminated via the bolt in the tongue, but does nothing to prevent sideways movement. I ask as my Pajero Sport has quite a lot of lateral movement.

Thanks Ally

Are you meaning the square tongue that bolts through fixed Haymen Reese tow bar ?
This question was asked about a month ago.. On mine I welded some angle iron around outer fixed bar to tighten then a few welds on the end of inner tongue . So there was NO heat on stressed part which could cause a fatigue area and crack, break..
If that's too much trouble . Try sick o flexing or silicon some washers each side where bolt to pin goes though ?

Yes it should have very little lateral movement. make sure you have a 50mm ball (or ball to suit female) and no excessive wear on ball or coupling.

Working for Blazeaid and towing their trailers I stuffed an almost new ball completely, just eroded the ball away.

The screw in the captive nut on the hitch receiver is only to be used to stop the shank from rattling when there is no trailer hitched. You will over stress things if you do not loosen it off when hitching up. When you use a WDH it removes all rattle from the hitch.

Thanks folk,
I will refer it to the dealership where i purchased car as the movement is about 1cm horizontal and 1 cm vertical.
Thanks again
