Purchased an Ibis 3 airconditioner which works very well as it cools and heats as Aircommand specifies, the only problem is every time the compressor cuts in and out there is a huge thump that shakes the 25ft van which is quite uncomfortable, especially at night when sleeping. Has anyone else had this problem with the same airconditioner?
Have contacted under warranty, Aircommand now trading as Dometic, they organised three different technicians to repair it but has made no difference. Now that the warranty has expired they seem to be wiping their hands of it.
Yep, I didn't like any of the rooftop offerings so specced out new van without an a/c & I'll fit a domestic split system. Modern inverter technology, efficient cheap & quiet.
3.5kw system for under $1000 is a win for me.

Welcome to the gang Lado, enjoy here and out in the playground.
I have the same aircon and does the same thing but I take no notice. I don't use it at night as so far my caframo fan works well at the end of my bed. I am in Townsville as we speak and has been low to mid 20's and humid over night.
Keep Safe on the roads.

we have been in Darwin for three weeks and there seems to be no letup from the heat and humidity, it should be the dry season now but it seems to be running late, so hence aircon every night as it is 25c. can't seem to get use to the thumping, and if it's not the thumping it's our chihuahua restless and frightened from the unrelenting noise.

Couple large tubes of 'No more gaps' should do the trick.

welcome to the world of rooftop mounted air conditioners.
We had fights with Dometic when the unit was under warranty, we had a number of air con mechanics look at the unit and they all said it is normal.
It was only when we asked for in depth technical information that they could not supply that they decided to replace the unit.
The replacement unit was less noisy but still has the "clung" when compressor cuts out and from what I have read on the various forums there are lots of complaints to the point most people just put up with the noise.
Hi Doug, having all the springs and shockies replaced, also several bushings and a universal joint. Found one engine mount cracked through and other one just starting. It never ends. Bring on W A. All well here, just getting a bit cold.
I had vibration issues with my Ibis but I didn't report it till 2 months out of warranty and they refused to do anything. I then reminded (as they are well aware of it) of implied warranty under consumer law where goods are supposed to be fit for the purpose. Strangely, they then decided to do something about it and fixed the issue (which was in fact part fault and part installation).
But I agree with others that Ibis is noisy when the compressor kicks in.
Perhaps when youre in a city, go visit a few RV dealers as "potential" buyers. As part of your viewing, get them to turn on a few air cons and compare the noise they make to your own - that way you will know if youre suffering the "standard" Ibis compressor thump or not

thanks for the info, will take it further with Aircommmand/Dometic as from the start when we fist complained about the thumping noise to them they informed us that the warranty will last till the issue is repaired.
Hi Lado. Be pleasant in your contact with them, but be firm with them and simply tell them they (Air Command) are aware of implied warranties and that the ACCC will likely support you if you have to complain to them - which you will do if A/C don't sort the problem. They backed down from the "youre out of warranty" attitude when I did this - pleasant, but willing to stand up to them.
But I do suggest to check some other air cons at Dealers to make sure that you have a problem and its not just the standard Ibis noise before you waste any time

Ibis3 will always thump. No fix so good luck with the warranty claim. I am going to fit a Daiken or Mitsubishi roof Cassette into the hole were the Ibis is, they are so much more efficient and effective. Only problem is that you have a fairly long run of copper tube for the gas and you have to make up a outside cover. Would not buy any other A/C now.

There is no cure, old technology so compressor cuts in and out, I am a retired tradie and tried everything in our previous van, new mounts (springs and rubbers) still thumped.
We decided we would never have another rooftop clunker, we now have a Fujitsu split inverter, simply works and super quiet and a third of the price.
How these companies get away with selling such rubbish I will never know, mind while ever people put up with them they will.
And as for filling the hole left in the roof if removed, dead easy, a standard 400x400 hatch will drop straight in the hole left by the offending ac.
