When parked up for about a month and hooked up to power my breakaway unit starts to make a loud humming noise. Stops if I turn the power off. It is not the unit's battery - put a new one in last time it happened. Charge van batteries with solar when not on power. Unit always has an orange light on - says fully charged.
Does it have something to do with not being hooked up and charging it from the vehicle - all I could work out from the net. Haven't been game to leave it humming for hours to see if it will stop! Unit it inside the boot on the side wall and only buzzes after about a month of sitting still.

Buzzing noise is a flat battery.Charge wire is black and usually connected to no 2 terminal of the 7 pin plug .The circuit diagram is on the inside of the Brakesafe cover which is easily removed. You can remove the battery and charge it on a smart charger. Some people connect it to the house battery.Should be diagrams and information on the brake safe website.
OK thanks for that. I thought the battery was also connected to the van batteries so should it not also charge from them?
Why does the buzz only happen when the van is plugged in to 240v?
If the battery is flat why is there still the orange ''fully charged' light still on?
When I got the new battery put in a couple of months ago the bloke said the old battery was fully charged and nothing wrong with it.

Spida ... if the orange light you refer to is the one circled in red in this pic, that light is the one that shows "On charge".
If that is on all the time - or when connected to 240v - then it means that 'something' is charging the battery.
Perhaps whatever is doing the charging is what is making the buzzing noise.
To check the 'condition' of the battery (ie if it is fully charged or not) you press the button on the far left - "Test Battery" - and that will bring up the green light to that button's right.
Of course, all that assumes this is the BreakSafe unit you have in your van.
Mine is connected to charge when connected to the vehicle - I have installed that small 3-stage smart charger for when I am on 240v and/or on 240v for a long period. Otherwise, I move around sufficiently to keep the battery charged from the vehicle. (Ignore the coiled extension cord - it has nothing to do with the unit or anything else in the boot.

We have a small charger on our brake safe as well. Nobody told us the unit doesnt charge if the vehicle is not connected. Im thinking of changing the battery feed to the main house batts, no problems as I see it.
Cheers
