help wanted with van electrics near Perth

Len has just upgraded ftom a camper trailer to van. Van has 12 and 240 power. 12 is run from battery charger to 2 batteries. He has a moveable solar panel that he wants to add. So is there anyone close to Perth who would like trip to the country this weekend ( We are up near Seabird 70kms north of wanneroo). Happy to put on lunch for you. We know nothing about how his system works and i do nt think the salesperson was a full bottle on it either or it was a case of info overload. He will be back in Midland next week if that would be easier. he really just needs advice on how to hook up solar panels to existing and a general run thru in how things run in layman terms. We are going to do a week of touring the south west with some eastern staters from the 14th. (They just want a quick tourist tour!!) and it would be great if we can get him sorted before then and do some free camping with him.this is his first foray into caravanning. We have done basic stuff like emptying loo .putting out awning etc but electrics is something we have no idea about.

Len is a new grey nomad and I am very disappointed that there was not one response to my asking for some help for him to understand how his power works and to give him some advise on solar. 190 people read my request but not one comment made!!

I only have limited knowledge in this area and set up my own system after much research, however the information you have provided (or lack of) is like asking how long a piece of string is. e.g.

  • Type of batteries.
  • Are they separate or wired parallel?
  • What equipment or devices are running on the system?
  • How powerful are the solar panels?

With this information someone with better knowlege than me may be able to help.

Hope you soon find the help you need.

Kevin,That is the sort of information he requires help with, are the 2 batteries he has enough, what size panels does he need, will it run his fridge etc. He doesn't want anyone to fit it all for him for free but advice on what he needs and he will happily pay someone to do the work but like all of us he doesn't want to be ripped off with a system that isn't going to do what he wants and we thought that there may have been one of our experts on here could have helped him with the information on talking to him and seeing what he has.

Sue & Phil,
Without answers to at least the questions in my previous post I doubt if anyone can help.

In the circumstances it would be better to seek the advice of an auto electrician and get the job done properly.

Hi Sue, I have only just noticed this thread but don't know if I can help.

If the southwest trip would bring Len to Pinjarra within the next two week I would be happy to have a look and advise him.

We will be leaving town soon after that.

Cheers Neil

Thanks Neil. He has decided to go with a business in Midland that deals exclusively in freecamping. They will go thru his van with him, advise him how what he has works and fit solar for him if he wants. Will pm you if we are going to call in.

Or try the 12 volt Shop in Kewdale.

They are specialists in the field.
