Sat dish cable into van

Hi all,

I need some help please with my sat dish cable into the new van.

We have an existing Sat king set top box/ dish / cable.

I tried using both external sockets on the out side of our Jayco van running the sat dish cable into either to log back on the STB for our trip. I could not pick up the Satellite siginals at all.

So I connected the Sat cable Via the open window direct into our STB and got straight away Strength (91-92 % )  Quality( 63-64%) which is fine and have now just renewed till 17th December.

Are these two external ports on the van  suitable for use normally with sat cables going in.confuseconfuseconfuse or how do you connect your cable otherwise. to your van.

Regards Jim

Hi Mike,

I was thinking if I had too. I might come up through the floor next to the water tank piping into the cabinet directly below the TV. I put the STB in the cabinet above the TV.

This way its out of site and I could use my spare grey water hose to hold the extra 10mtrs of cable under the van proper. However the brain has as yet, not communicated with the body one this idea. Slow and steady With the drill at the ready.smile I hate having to drill yet another hole. I wasn't thinking of going through the van wall total.cry

Thanks for your solution. Do you run yours separately for your sat dish set up.

Cheers Jim

I just fitted a Sat system to my van and I used the single fitting through the van wall... took all of 3 minutes to fit.

One of these;  http://www.accessantennas.com.au/perth-discount/satellite-kits-systems/caravan-wall-fittings/explore-oz-thru-the-wall-fitting/

You should find something here to use.

Yes I only use the sat dish now,  don't carry the antenna.   The antenna connection is still on the wall.

I used (the bottom pic)  the  through wall one. Fitted just to suit where we sit the TV.

The "Tapered Elbow"  in the picture,  clamps to the Dish Lead, and is adjustable but remains on the Lead.  It turns 90 deg. to remove it.  So it is easy to push the lead through  and  it Bayonet locks into the " through wall" socket.  Your lead is water proof and insect proof where it comes through the wall.

Mike

PS There is a cap that Bayonet locks in,  when the cable is not through the wall.   Completely weather and insect proof.

Sockets are only 75 ohm for regular TV antenna as mentioned you will need to "breach" the van in some way to get it to work, I have a Poptop so it goes through the skirt where the vents are. I would leave the existing ports where they are now for when you are in suburbia and add a new one that goes through the floor as mentioned, remember it needs to be water tight so plan carefully! (If its aluminum clad as mine is and decide to go through the wall be careful when drilling to prevent tearing the thin alloy.. bit of tape on the cutting area will help)

The through the wall fitting introduces two connectors. Each connector adds a dB or two of signal loss. You are better off going for the Ezy-Eye or similar so you can pass your cable through the wall and save on that attenuation. I have had the Ezy-Eye in my van for over 10 years and it has worked well. If I change vans I will probably go for the Foldaway Direct Connector.

Last van.
I connected H/Duty cable to through wall tv cable.
Drew it through wall to outside hole.
Fitted Sat cable ends to both ends. job done.
Also have an adapter M/F TV to screw Sat cable fitting, inside.
for when using tv Arial in metro areas.
TV already has one of each to suit at each end of it's cable.

Can use TV cable or Sat cable from wall.
was going to drill hole through with plug to suit (already bought it)
but this was easier and less messy, cable wise.

Also have a looooong (25ft) sat cable with dish on H/Duty speaker tripod
for when lots of cover around or van under cover.
and wanting better angle/position for dish.

Nowadays 32 stations. maybe 0ne show a week worth watching.
total waste of money. apart from T Box Rugby and You Tube.
TV is total crap. then some..

Do you have a winegard TV antenna which is connected to the external sockets that you are connecting the Sat system to?

If so,  you need a separate through the wall fitting installed. The sat disk will not work through a winegard antenna set up.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for your help.

The Brain has told me that I want to keep the Sat cable attached once only. So the body will climb aboard the garage creaper and slide back under to see where I can attach a hand caster fishing reel that I us now to hold the total cable in place with cable ties, with the cable passing straight up into the cabinet. A small holding box 400mm x 400mm x 100mm would be nice the brain has replied. An extra large old ammo box would be nice. Thankyou brain, I will look on flea Bay.

Hi Phil,

Its OK to just call me Jim.

I just finished what the brain told me to do. I had an old ammo box hiding away for a rainy day. That day just happened to coincide with today. She was a bit worst for ware as I had run over it some 40 years back as a young sporting shooter. I used it to keep the ammo in it. however it got slightly run over in my trusty 63 beatle.the lid was slightly worst for wear.

The box is 250mm long x 80mm wide x 165mm deep without the detachable lid. My plastic fishing hand caster 230mm.smilesmilesmilesmile

So away's I go back under the van to do a Study. Um yes well those water hoses come right through the bottom cuboard from under the van, confuse

I go's back inside the van and follow the same hoses.smile I can push a pencil down the same grommet. out comes my trusty plastic tongue & grove strip and up the wall one go's.

All clear.smile Can I get the other end of my rounded end of the sat cable back down the service hole. Yes I can, we are in Business. 10 minutes of slowly guiding the cable from the inside to the outside. With the other end screwed into the back of the STB. red ,white and yellow plugged back in. Power plugged in. Close the cupboard son.

Back under the van we wind onto the fishing caster, all of the cable ( lead first). Secure with 2 cable ties and she slips into the old ammo box. I drilled a 13mm hole thought the hand caster, 2 x 6mm hole through the ammo box  fitted 100mm of gal chain via a cup head bolt and 6mm nylon lock nut. to the other side a 35mm pad lock.

Tonight I used my fold up van step and van jack to hold the ammo box in place while the Extreme liquid nails  ( big green shed $5.55) sets over night. Job done.

I will post some Photo's tomorrow. One and a Half hours of my time.winkclap.gif

Hey Jim

Get yourself one of these. They have no influence on your cable other than just as a straight pass-thru to get from exterior to interior.
