More on Windows 10

Went to talk to the computer tech at the local computer shop the other day to seek out solutions to the fact that Windows Live Mail on Windows 7 will no longer work for my outlook.com email address after end of June. As part of the discussion I mentioned that I did not want to upgrade to Windows 10 to which he advised me that it gets to a point that it automatically upgrades anyway. That very same day I left my computer for a while only to find, when I returned, the Windows 10 upgrade 50% done, so I decided ok will see how it goes, hoping it may solve my email problem. So far it seems to be working, I have disabled a lot of the apps as advised on another post, and my mail is working. BUT the mail app is missing one vital feature and that is the ability to set up 'Mail Groups' or 'Mail Lists' something I use a lot.

So be aware that Windows 10 may automatically download and the Mail app is not as good as Windows Live Mail. I think Windows has stuffed this one up.cry

Cheers

Joff

I'm happy with windows 10, the main reason for changing from 7 was niggling problems and the change fixed those and also I believe microsoft will not be offering updates for their older operating systems shortly, hence the free upgrade, it must cost a small fortune to keep those older systems viable.

Thanks for the suggestion Yarra. Thunderbird has been suggested so might look into it more.

Do understand that Microsoft (like all software companies) makes their profits from selling software, not giving it away.
Ever since Windows 98 Microsoft has included cut-down (reduced functionality) versions of their software with Windows.
This include programs like, WordPad a cut down version of Word, Outlook Express a cut down version of Outlook, and others.

Each new edition of Windows has had a completely different version of mail client. Outlook Express --> Windows Mail --> Windows Live Mail --> Mail, but the have all been of reduced functionality as a means to encourage you to buy the full-featured Outlook which is also part of the mid level and above versions of the Microsoft Office Suite.
One of the main limitations of the "free" editions of mail client provided by Microsoft has been the ability to 'Backup' your mail.
Outlook however, has always been built with the ability to backup and to 'Import' accounts, messages and contacts from any of Microsoft's free mail apps and these free mail clients have all been able to 'export' to Outlook.

Because of the significant changes Microsoft has been making to keep the bad guys out of your mail accounts on their FREE services such as Hotmail (aka Live Mail, aka Live.com, aka Outlook.com) and to stop viruses from raiding your PC's mail client for data to reproduce, Microsoft has come to the point that they will no longer provide "support" for the old free stuff.
Your old free stuff will continue to work as before, it is just that support and development for newer security protocols will no longer be provided and Windows Essentials (Mail, Writer, Movie Maker, Gallery, etc) is now only available for download for Windows 7, 8 & 8.1 . There will be no provision of a unique download version of Essentials for Windows 10 but the versions for 7, 8 * 8.1 do work just fine on 10.

I'm another Thunderbird user. Excellent programme, easy to install and easy to set up your mail profile. Use this page to download the British English version if you don't like Yankee spellings. When you are installing it look for the options to load your address book from your current mail programme. Use MozBackup to backup your settings, address book and mail. You can also use it to transfer everything in Thunderbiird to a new computer.

A few months ago we installed Win 10, it gave us quite a few problems so the solution was to go back to Win 7. This weekend we were once again offered the free upgrade to Win 10, we decided to give it another try. We still had a problem with Reckon Software, this was resolved with reapplying the original serial number, appart from that we have decided the upgrade is good and will stick with it. There must have been a few improvements since originally offered
