water pump in Jayco Heritage

I have blown the fuse for the water pump about twice now, the van (2nd hand 12 yrs old) has just ran out of warranty about 2 months.

I now find the the water pump will not work, am I right in thinking that it has gone to heaven and that is why the fuse kept blowing? I had water gauges fitted to the tanks and I thought there might have been an air lock and the pump could not handle it. There is now no sound at all from the water pump like there use to be.

Would a handy person be able to fit a new one it is down behind the cupboard, I am the sort of person that it is better to fix it than muck around with just out of warranty and probable hassles in my later life when I was younger and fire in the belly  it would be a different matter. I don't think cost is all that much.

thanks norm

I replaced my water pump in the Motorhome. Bit of a story but I bought a brand new one( Shurflo) from Reward RV in Melbourne that was on special. Arrived in three days to Qld.

Four screws holding it down with rubber feet. The two power wires were unclipped and the hose connections were unscrewed. I actually changed the rubber feet from the old one and replaced them onto the new model. Same screw holes in the body of the pump but different pattern of holes in the feet. Rather than drill new holes in the motorhome. Easy fix.

The whole operation was less than an hour.

It took four hours to get to the pump because the guy who built the Motorhome has the pump on one side of the bus and the water tank on the other. The pump is under the sofa bed which is a whole new story.

I later found out that the pump that packed up. (It was a model only sourced in the Good old US of A) could be repaired with a sixty dollar kit bought locally. I bought it in Esk in Qld in a Produce and irrigation place. They use this type of pump for lots of uses in the Ag industry for chemical spaying, water pumping and even diesel tanks on quads for farm vehicles so they carry the spares for the pumps.

Same impellor unit multi fits.

I now have a spare. If I had done a little more research I would have found that out and saved myself about $150 instead of buying a whole new unit I could have bought the repair kit only.

So if you do get the pump out and depending what's wrong it may be repairable with a new impellor kit if the motor is OK.

Good luck. Not a hard job to replace the pump but like any van or motorhome probably fiddly to get at.

PS.

My pump is a Shurflo but lots of the major brands are the same. You can replace the impellor section if the motor is still OK. I also give the brushes and commutator a good spray with electrical contact cleaner.  Jaycar for one sell the stuff in an aerosol can.

For what it's worth, the Shurflo pump in my Jayco had the connections facing down. Vibration of the pump caused one of the wires to fall off. After that the pump made no noise. To access the pump under the corner cupboard was a nightmare, and after I finally tightened the spade connectors and refitted them I would have gladly tightened the monkey who fitted them so loose in the first place.
If you can locate the wires for your pump, check it with a good 12v supply before you take too much of the plumbing apart. If you need to disconnect the plumbing, spend a bit of time draining the water out first, including the HWS if you have one.
Good luck.

 Thank Kevin C,

It could be as simple as a loose wire, as you say it is in a terrible place.
