We have a diesel heater and we have not used the heater for just on 12 months. We leave in early August to head west of Brisbane and down thru the outback NSW.
My Q. is this.
Is the fuel in the 10 litre tank OK or does diesel deteriorate during the summer. I also have a 10 litre can of Diesel in reserve.
Also. Having the diesel heater for a year..... when do I have it service.?
I do know diesel does deteriorate over time. There is a product called 'Stabil' there is one for petrol and one for diesel. Supercheap Repco etc. sell it.
It's good to add if you are going to leave the fuel in your tank for three months or longer.
I am out of the stuff at the moment so cannot check if it will work on older fuel. Maybe someone can let you know on the Forum. As for your heater there are a few members who have them and can advise on cleaning/servicing.
We've had tractors on farm only used during hay making . Never changed the diesel . We check the filter or water seperator .. I would run it on high for 20 min or so to clean ..
If it hasn't been used much then I wonder if it would need servicing at all. If it is running OK without smoking I would not bother.
In my Eberspacher D2, the diesel pump filter, and a filter in the heater, also Glow plug need changing as routine maintenance. I can do it myself but you do need a special socket for the glow plug. You get a new one with the new spare.
There is a good little Video on doing it on Youtube if you are confident in doing this your self.
The glow pin in the Eberspacher is not required to be changed at service. It only needs replacement if and when it fails.
The injection screen is recommended to be changed annually along with the gasket between the combustion chamber and fan housing which is usually cracked or broken.
There is also a tiny filter in the fuel pump intake pipe that may need attention if an easier to get to filter is not fitted at the tank outlet as an extra precaution.
Servicing is fairly simple to do and I find it easier if I remove the unit from the van and do it on the bench.
