I wouldn't. Even though a great little truck Dirt cheap nowadays too.
Patrol/Troopie ONLY, for safety.
100 ser, Land cruiser if you desperate ... (chuckle)
Gday...
The questions was - "has any body towed a 3 ton van with one of these 2000 model land rover discovery td5"
Land Rover consider them capable to tow 3tonne and more.
I have met dozens of Disco II's towing vans of various weights and size over my eight years on the road full-time - every one of them with 100's of thousands of K's on the clock, owned by happy campers.
A bit slow on the hills they say - but definitely capable.
Cheers - John

Agree. Great trucks Small trucks. same as utes. fine in straight line and towing with lotsa power in running gear. But. when something goes wrong. then the heavier van with wider wheel base and probably a little tail heavy Weighing up to a ton MORE than you. WILL control you Same as light rear end Utes. Fine in a straight line. But. The next horse float I see in the bushes on corner won't be the last. and they LIGHTER with two horses than some of these caravans.
I've spent too many yrs on road. working.trucks and vanning. seen and heard of, too many "that went wrong" to change my opinion. I've pulled a few out of their cars. and rolled a few back on to their wheels again too. Just look at the numbers of caravan accidents nowaday and increasing.
Sorry. But I'd never tow more than 2 ton with my D MAx. and then only with full weight in tray for stability. She weighs 2.45 ton now, as standard. over the weighbridge. I respect my missus life thank you.
PS.
Show me one bloke that's towed the 3.5ton more than once with that model.
Mate bought one for his 3.5ton on trlr boat to save using truck all the time.
First trip to ramp. Guess what towed the boat back home again.
It wasn't the Landy...

discovery 2050kg
patrol 2090kg
troopy 2340kg
not a lot of difference in these, I would consider wheel base a more important issue and the disco has disc brakes all round. My disco was a better tow vehicle than my patrol, have owned all the major brands and the disco is only bettered by the series 3 and 4
cheers
blaze
hi blaze what year was your land rover and how many kys had it done and do they have any trouble with them I am looking at a 2000 mod with only 129000 on the clock my van is 2.7 ton loaded
mine was a 1999 and it is now retired after an altercation with a pallet that come off a road train, hit the road just as I hit it with front right wheel, shattered the pallet and drove a shattered bit of timber up into a coolant pipe. I was towing the van and by the time I had pulled over I had done some serius damage to my motor. Go here and have a read, most of these people airnt to bias www.aulro.com/afvb/
cheers

Enjoyed my 2002 TD5 Landrover Dics. 2.5, 5 cyllinder. It was 10 years old, 3rd hand pulled my 2 tonne van well not a big van but I doubt weight would be very noticable up to say 3 toone.
It was brought as a toy, when I retired a few life chages took place, Disc needed to go, we both miss its comfort, to us it was special.
A very comfotable drive, there is a lot of newer cars that would be cheaper on fuel today, back when these were new they were great and compared with a few bigger motors these on fuel are still cheaper to run.
No van, highway running 10.10 litres to hundred.
Around the city 11.4 litres to hundred.
With the caravan 14.32 litres per hundred
These figures are general, we have done better and worse, I had 3.5 years of running the Disco, most problems are what you expect from an old car, cost of repairs compared to a couple other makes around the same age, a couple of bearing I needed were real cheap, embarrassing I rang up to questioned the price, no you were charged right, a electric window winder $65 my other car $280. A couple of genuine auto cooler hoses $900 but they were 14 years old, the fitting let go, hose was alright.
Just remember its an old car, could be fun or a night mare but you will learn to love it.

Scuse me.
The GU has always been rates at 3.2 ton. Manual.
6.3ish, ton gross. with 350kg Drawabar. My '02 model was rated such.
2340 empty. 3.2 ton when travelling with 2.7plus van on back and 3.75 tinny on roof.
4 wheel discs. Chip, snorkel 2 in lift. (These weights on every trip at local scales going out of town)
towed all over Aust. from '02 till last yr when sold.
Gave 9.7ish sometime 10 KMPL by itself on trips.
and averaged over the 13 /14 yrs at 6.3 to 6.5 KMPL towing that rig .All basically at road speeds.
Get up to date. the GQ finished around '96/7.
Those Disco and other figures are ALL paper figures to sell cars.
I know a few with big boats that tried them when they came out.
But none kept them long, as tugs for 3 ton and up boats, or even big horse, floats.
If you look at most. as tray/rear weights increase. Tow weights go down.
and anybody that tows anything over 2ish ton with an empty ute is heaven headed.
PS. My 2010 D Max dual weighs 2.3ton over same scales (council) as is.
I carry around 3/350 kg in tray all the time. Maybe more.
with 1.8ish ton van I load it up to around 2.6/2.7 ton
And around 13/14 KMPL with van at road speeds.
It gave 518km/52 ltrs. by itself, last top up..
I don't get much more than that b4 empty light comes on
So much for the 79 ltr tanks hey. I carry a 20l Jerry.
Come on Macka 17, the man asked a question about Landrover you come back with all this stuff about all these other makes of cars and to confuse matters more by stating fuel figures in another format.
Stay on the subject which was has anybody towed with a Landrover Discovery series 2.

He debated the fact that PATROLS didn't have a 3 ton tow limit. I gave an example....Plus reasons why it's not a good idea with those stated weights,
and why.
Then another as to why those smaller units are dangerous when things go wrong because of lower physical sizes and wheelbases. and towing capacity when loading them up (IE variations of loads )
The more people that know these possible variances. the better, in my eyes. A lot nowadays haven't done any, nor got any clue either. YET.
Regarding consumption figures. that x 100 is stupid.
Mileage. times tank volume is simple as. No figuring out.
I got 6.5KMPL towing 10KMPL free. Simple division. 2 seconds.

Yea I know.
Only saying why they not a SAFE option with those weights. and why.
Other items were basically answering other posters.
Sorry if this little duck got off line.
I thought these forums were primarily to help those with less practice/knowledge.
We all learn by mistakes. the less people have to make, the better.
People ask questions. others answer, and hopefully give other alternatives if other items more suitable.
I always hoped others would do that for me on the multitudes of things I have no idea about.
Towing. weights and balance safety. I have a fair bit of of experience with.
Having driven caravans. Large cranes and trucks for 50 odd yrs.
Big big gusts of wind out there too . Have to be on the ball and concentrate no matter what you drive ., unlike cities where we follow the car in front !! Not exactly driving , more steering ..
Is this forum deteriorating to the point a person can't ask a simple question without the "other marque lovers" wanting to spoil it for him? Give him a break and be a bit civil. If you don't know anything about Discos, then back off. If you want to sing the praises of your Toyo or Mitsu then start another thread.
To the OP, I have a very satisfied friend whose Disco does everything he has ever wanted. But I think you should ask questions in other places where there aren't so many narrow grey minds.
Yea I know. Only saying why they not a SAFE option with those weights. and why. What a closed-minded comment made from a biased point of view. Do some homework on the specifications - talk to the thousands who use them to tow - and then get over your fixation based on your own personal choice/bias. Other items were basically answering other posters.
Sorry if this little duck got off line. I thought these forums were primarily to help those with less practice/knowledge. Who said snap1946 has less practice/knowledge??? How did you deduce that??? We all learn by mistakes. the less people have to make, the better. People ask questions. others answer, and hopefully give other alternatives if other items more suitable. yep - alternatives are often good to provide ... but if a direct, SPECIFIC, question is asked why give the gen on oranges when the question was specifically about watermelons??? I always hoped others would do that for me on the multitudes of things I have no idea about.
Towing. weights and balance safety. I have a fair bit of of experience with. Having driven caravans. Large cranes and trucks for 50 odd yrs. but ya not on ya Pat Malone there Macka.
Gday...
