DL, My understanding is that a standard licence is all that is required to drive a vehicle up to 4.5Tons, some states may have other limitations eg Automatic Licence only so cannot drive a manual. Prefer a motorhome owner to confirm this.

To me the GVM upgrade can be dependent upon the vehicle as I understand some vehicles have been downgraded to fit into both categories.

Only need a ordinary licence up to 4500 klg

Definitely 4500kg for standard C license, then over requires MR (medium rigid).

My truck, an Isuzu NPR250 is factory rated at 9 tonne, had it de-rated at original rego to drive on a standard car license, they just stick an addition vin plate on it, giving the new down rated load capacity of 4500kg, if ever needed it can easily be reversed but then an MR license is required to drive, same vehicle, silly but true I'm afraid.

Might add I do have an old HGV class 1 english license from many years ago so do have big rig experience anyway, but when we bought our current rig we couldn't get an MR endorsement done quickly due to the mining boom then in WA. they were fully booked out for months, so we took the easy simple route of de-rating.

People should be carefull of those truck based motorhomes and buses that "can be driven on a car license". In previous years and perhaps even currently the manufacturers cheated on the weights and they are false as registered. furious So if you go near a weight bridge check out on the road they will fail the check and you will be "in the sh*t".

Even if is just under the 4500Kg unloaded, when loaded for travel and all the gear, it will be over. Again you will be "in the sh*t" sooner or later. The registration authorities know these facts and that is why they are doing weight checks out on the road. cry

Hi guys thanks for the replies. I know it's 4.5 on a car licence but with out weighing the unit i already know it's way over when loaded. So am in the process of having a new VASS approved certificate so as to cover insurance ect
