Remapping diesel motors

Has any one had a remap of the ecu instead of having the motor chipped?  If so what were the results?   [ good or bad]

I've done 3 chips.
have several mates that have done the more exxy remap.
and chipping.

ME.
Next time round. Remap every time.
Chipping is good. but basically ALL of them just adjust/prolong fuel feed and timing.

Remap retunes the WHOLE ECU.
Resetting just about everything to suit both you and you towing weights/ratios.

The only thing I can see possibly detrimental.
Is getting a remap. then on next service. the techs plug you in and "update" your ECU.
resetting all your expensive remap to factory.

I'll only be getting any... remap,
IF there is a hard copy (disc or chip to reset) with it.
OR promise to reset it at NO cost,
Otherwise "Copy please"

The remaps are that good.
we (chips) go the cheaper way basically.

Even the Steinbaur and such don't do such a good/effective job.

They all just add timing/fuel adjustments, basically to ECU.
like tickling the jets in your carby,

I used to spend hrs with needle files on the fixed jets on racing bikes.

Still have them.

Remap resets the Whole engine/transm, timing side of ECU.

You have a completely different vehicle with a good tech

Check around. SOME are better than others.
It's worth travelling to get the best.

Have fun.

They can assist in desired fine tuning . An example . For my motorhome to change into top . I had to be doing just over 100 kph . The ECU would drop boost . So it took ages to change into top gear . This case is 4 speed 6.5 turbo diesel . An upgrade with ECU it held boost a little longer and changed at 90 kph at 2200 rpm . Before it was nearly 3000 rpm . It saves fuel . Tweeks to gear change with auto and turbo . Being a motorhome with higher wind resistance just need a tweek . It's not always about power . But the tech doing it needs to know what he's doing . Just isolating EPA type strategies doesn't always make things better !

As I said.
Some are betterer than otherers.
Find a gud won, U sweet.

ALl std production vehicles ARE detuned by MFG's on first release.
So they can "upgrade" the systems over several yrly updates.
and it looks like they doing something new each time.
Normally over 4 or 5 upgrades.

All we doing is early factory updates, already allowed for BY the factory.
We just beat them to it basically.
Tuning your ECU to suit YOUR type of driving and vehicle loading.
IS doing your vehicle and running gear a favour.
Specially the rev's and gear changing when under load.

From a mechanics point of view, There's virtually NO detrimentals to a tune.

AS LONG AS YOU STAY UNDER mechanicals/electronics Maximum rated limits.
and YOU drive to that tune.
It's All a plus plus.

I went to my friends who run a machine shop . Was VERY surprised how many late model diesels engines he was repairing . From Mercedes to Toyota . Funny thing is the so called cheap engines like Kea . They havnt seen one .. I'd say in most cases it's neglect or no maintenance ! Going by oil galleries I'd say maintenance .. People ignoring check engine light function ! Keep in mind most commercial motors have staff driving them !!

Hi Phillipn,

I am looking at the same before you make your mind up read a article by Allan Whiting in his write up he covers blocking off ERG and Catch Cans if you do any one of these you should tell your Insurance Company because you have modified you car but in end you have to make your own mind up.

John.
