Apple/Android Car Play Systems

Is anybody currently using either the Apple or android car play systems for navigation - I am assuming  if you lose your phone signal then you are also going to lose your sat nav is that correct ?

I know nothing about Apple or android car play systems for navigation

My old Navman GPS Satellite Navigation has only ever lost the signal in the Polly Farmer Tunnel in Perth

It does not rely on the Internet

It is so accurate, that while crossing the top end, it tells me that a stand alone servo, was about 10 kilometres away from where it should have been

Yes it is known as the Polly Pipe in some quarters

  1. In respect to Polly Farmer, a great West Aussie footy player, who was once kidnapped by the Eastern States folk
  2. The tunnel is lined with vitreous enamel panelling for easy maintenance and light reflectivity
I suppose that it could be mistaken for an oversize rectangle storm water poly pipe
  3. From memory there was also some pollie squabbling going on about it, before, during, and after it was built

I have only been through it less than a handful of times, as it is mainly for the true believers, who live/travel in the city

Tony like the history of the polly pipe this is moving right away from the original SAT NAV post but here goes anyway -

My first introduction to Australian Rules Football was between the years 1978 and 1981 when we lived in Dampier. We only had ABC television and obviously the only football games ever broadcast were from the WAFL & VFL. Remarkably I can still remember some of the WAFL players and where they played like Mark Jackson (South Freo), Budgie Bahargiar (East Freo), the Krakouer brothers (Claremont), the Narkle brothers (Swan districts) and Barry Cable (East Perth) but I don't remember a Polly Farmer. Mostly I remember these guys because that's all anyone  ever talked about at work or in the pub, I also preferred the ruff and tumble of the WAFL to the VFL so I became quite interested in and started following it.  I know that most of these guys were eventually kidnapped by the eastern states because I saw them in latter years running around in the VFL but one thing I'll guarantee you is that they weren't kidnapped by anyone in either NSW or Queensland because back then no one in these 2 states had any real interest in that silly game (how things have changed).

You are of course correct Dave, we are well off topic here in respect to the Sat Nav question

But all is not lost, because as this is in the Techies Corner, a lot of people people do not really understand technical answers, and may not realise that we are off topic

So answering a technical question in a layman type of speak
As Polly Farmer must have been before your time, have a look at the link below for a bit of an insight on why Polly Farmer, is unable to answer your question

I use an Apple phone for all my Navigation which as a Solo I find it indispensable. Apple maps to get to streets and Google maps to get to places.

Don't worry Davro.
It is still a really silly game.

"Ping Pong"

a hybrid mix of 4 codes and not much of any.
Wierd..

Poofters make believe footy hey
With their tight arse shorts and sleeveless shirts.

Coupla good Tackles would sort them out.

And a good scrum or two,
to show them where the balls are supposed to be hanging... Chuckle..

OH GPS.

I prefer Garmin as they seem to be the most reliable of them.

Had 9 or 10. Marine and road. Only ever had one sick.

and a factory reset fixed that.

But they sent me a replacement from States just the same.

Had a 750 US model from prev, trip (then)

They swapped it for a 760 AUST Model.

And at near $800 a pop. Most impressed.

Thanks guys for the advice on the Sat Nav systems that you are using and Ron for the link obviously Polly was a bit before my time but I will definitely read the info on him but the question for the tech group is "Will I lose my Sat Nav when the phone signal drops out with the Apple and Android car play systems ? " This new car doesn't have an inbuilt Sat Nav or music system such as a CD player but relies on the connection to a smart phone, usb or maybe an iPad or tablet. I agree crusty the iPhone navigation is good when it's working but what happens when you lose your phone signal does the GPS part still work ? Macka you forgot to put aerial in front of ping pong and when you read it's history it probably started as a version of rugby anyhow.

Back to the phone, a lot of the smart phones incorporate a GPS receiver.

I have an Android based stereo/GPS in my Holden Colorado, see link below

I have installed Sygic offline GPS, which is an offline app and therefore doesn't rely on internet data. Install Wikicamps as well and send Wikicamps campsites straight to Sygic

cheers BB.

The Sydney tunnels have the phone and radio signals piped through them. You will loose your GPS signals but not your phone signals when in the tunnels. If you maintain a steady speed most sat navs will keep calculating your approximate positions when travelling through tunnels.

I have always been an Ipad/Iphone user up until 3 months ago. I upgraded to a Samsung S7 and while I had to buy all my apps again, I am pleased I changed. While it was a bit of a learning curve, the limitations of Apple were annoying. Linking Wikicamps straight to Sygic GPS on the Ipad was non existant. All cordinates had to be entered manually. On the Samsung and my in dash Android device it sends coordinates straight to Sygic or any other compatible GPS app. POI Pocket is another app that is only on the Android platform
