My transit is blowing black smoke. I have taken it to the ford dealership and had it checked out. They checked injectors, fuel, filters, EGR, remapped and couldn't find anything wrong.
They advised against using an injector cleaner because it can damage the seals. Its just when I accelerate so I'm wondering if I should still be worried. Its done 180,000ks. Maybe I'm just a leadfoot lol.
Make sure air cleaner is clean,Unrestrictive .May have wrong type air filter . Possibly disconnect crankcase breather on rocker cover and fit oil separator ? If it's a turbo engine ? Check for shaft play at compressor wheel ? Should be some but not obviously not excessive . If there's any intake restriction ? It will run rich . Can take inlet pipe off and check if there's oil in inlet ? I take it that it doesn't have partical filter on exhaust ?
all the high compression diesels blow unburnt fuel out the back when accelerating. Watch the Nissan Navaras - even brand new ones - they seem to be the worst.
I have a DMax and if I really boot it hard, it will blow out heaps, but under normal driving, no problems.
Just had its 80K major service and the Dealer checked all its settings and all good.
You can do many adjustments to the motor and use after market gear to improve it, but it will only decrease the blow out.
AK is right in his advice of avoiding WOT

Hi Aus, NOTHING is a big word. In 2012 update to Transit, the engine was "lifted' from Ford Ranger, same size exactly, slightly different tune. cheers Crig

Correct. When accalerating hard some black smoke is normal for a desiel. Not so a petrol.
White smoke is unburnt diesel, blue smoke is oil, black smoke is partly burnt diesel as the fire ran out of oxygen before all the fuel was burnt. The likely causes have been covered, air clean, pipe blockage, slow to come up on turbo boost pressure so full throttle off the mark will produce black smoke until the turbo gets up to full speed/pressure. The one not mentioned and most commonly missed is intake air leaks. Look around all the hose joints after the turbo and the inlet manifold to the head, air leaks will show up are oily patches and streaked dirt. If you don't find any leaks and the performance still feels good the don't worry too much about it.
