Solar panel voltage pulsing

I have a 160w porable folding panel with a controller glued to the back.

I checked the voltage after the controller but before connecting to a battery and noticed that the voltage is pulsing from 0 to max constantly only stablising when connecting to the battery. Just wonding if this is typical or do I have a fault in the controller.

Could anyone please advise

thanks

Hi Moonraker smile

Normal. What you are seeing is the regulator switching on and off rapidly. With a battery connected it will settle down at the battery voltage until it gets to the max voltage and then switch on and off again to control the voltage as set.

Thanks Jaahn,
Didnt want to connect it to my battery until confirmed OK.
I carry a third battery in the rear of the tug use to power the waeco fridge when parked camping for a while. When traveling power the fridge from the dual battery setup. I bought the solar panels to help keep the third battery topped up when stationary as well as other battery charging as needed.
Cheers
