Cooling in Alto teardrop caravan

Hi Everyone,

I just returned from Renmark South Australia,  The temperature hit 40 and the air conditioner gave out overnight.

The next day it worked but wasn't cold enough to make any real difference to the temperature in the camper.

I was on mains power,  under shade, blinds closed and had the awning up.

I need a backup cooling solution in case it happens again.

Any ideas ?

A reflective flysheet over the roof slows down the radiant heat from the sun, but in 40+ heat, it won't be as good as an aircon. To put a flysheet over your teardrop, you would need some rails on the sides of the roof as attachments..

It is refrigerated.  The bloke who sold it to me said it was just like a home air conditioner and suited to australian heat.

I questioned it because the van is made in Canada but its changed to australian standards when it arrives here.

Hi.
Suggestion.

I've done it on last 3 vans.

Heat Reflective paint. 2 pack.

2 coats recommended 3 coats better
. does several things.
Seals and fully waterproofs complete roof and seams.
Reflects the sun and truly cools, stops you heating up so much inside.

A mate put it over his full size, live in shed up North of Townsville.
Roof. walls. front and back. It's basically white but can colour to suit.
Reduced Air cond operation by near half. truly.

A few panels on roof Specially over dining\lounge area. also reflects sun\heat.
But that paint really is the ducks nuts.
Thicker the coats, better it is.

If that piccy your van?.
Paint from front seam just above gas bottle over to the step in roof at back.
That'd do a great job.

PS.
Dinky little thing, ain't it.
Best of luck with Air cond.
Look it up on net see if parts avail here first.

Hi Guru,

What was the brand of paint and where did you buy same.

I rang a company some time ago to purchase, but they would not sell same. Needed to have them to do the job.

I am a bit of a DIY type of guy.

P.S.

I am still waiting for someone to invent a diesel Air conditioner, similar to the diesel heater.

Sorry Jay. Can't remember name.
I got it from an Adel dealer yrs ago.

Go on net though ('ang on. I will.)
Back in a tic.

Thermoshield I used.
Another Caravan specific (flexible) is "Globalcote"

Look for 2 pac heat reflective paints. there's pages of 'em.
that first one is good.
and brilliant white with top coat. Can colour to suit.

I did 3 coats of base coat and 2 coats of sealer.
2 plus 2 coats will do.
I had a bit left over from prev van coating.

And one of those 4 in profiling rollers is ideal. Gets into corners and ridges.

2 tressles and 2 planks from broons for a day if starting early otherwise 2 days.
They cheap enuff. $23? a day last time.

Just walk along the side doing your thing then.
NOT Up Down. Up Down, the ladder

Very effective too. at both sealing and reflecting.
Preferably UNDER any panels too.
The heat still comes through them to a point.

Have fun. and don't doon a damp. Humis. or wet day.
2 pacs do not like moisture.
Dryer air the better.

Works well.

The answer is simple and easy - replace the aircon unit with a reliable unit - painting the van or otherwise trying to insulate the van will be of no use unless in direct sun and it's at night when trying to sleep that you need the cool air. The most reliable aircon units are those designed for domestic use....those designed for vans seem to give many problems and cost much more.

Good Luck.
