breakaway controller

biggrinbiggrinbiggrinHow long has it been since you have checked your breakaway brake controller test button in your vans .I have been back home now from a 2 month trip down south to visit relo,s in NSW and the other day as i was going around the van doing a visual inspection ,i had a look at ours ,pressed the test button ,and it was showing that the battery needed charging. i took it out to have a look inside it ,got my multimeter out and the battery showed 12.3 amps .Called a auto electrician to come and have a look at it also ,and he said that the cicuit board looked like it had some moisture on it shortcircuting it . Before i went away down south i did an inspection of the van ,all looked good .It did not rain ,and i did not encounter any water crossing at all ,so is a mystery what could have caused it to happen .So just as a reminder to all go out now and see if yours is working correctly .Cheers JOHN.

Depending on where you r. Condensation?.
Or water soak when cleaning van.

I bought one New. for my van recently. $64 del.
Van under 2 ton so don't "legally" need.
But "I" do.

I've seen results of a van coming adrift and a queue of people at bus stop.
45 odd yrs ago.

Mine has a clamp down battery\electrics cover. I added Sikaflex to seam,
Just to be sure.
Personally. I reckon. a van heavy\big enough for electric brakes to be fitted.
Is big enough for a Breakaway to be fitted too.
Mine rated 1.86 ton, Coromal Tandem.

A bit stupid, Irresponsible at that size I reckon.

John, I hope you really meant 12.3 volts.

It is recommended that the switch on the drawbar be replaced every 2 - 3 years too.  There is no protection against moisture ingress into the switch and they DO corrode.

I opened one of mine after I had replaced it and the contacts that should have been in there weren't!  The switch was totally useless.

I hit the inlet port of mine with WD on install, then every time I use it after.
Same as the wiring sockets into car.
ALl elect, open connections need protection . Specially when near beach like us.

The ones on the Roadstars I had, were wired into van battery, not their own.
Well. I could never find a battery for any of them anyway.
Just wires going into loom.

Mine's got a 12a Gel cell in there.(had a look)

Should be good for 5 yrs coupled to van battery and solar topping them up.
