Suburban HWS reset

When we switch on the HWS it usually doesn't start. Twisting or bumping the reset beside it usually fixes the problem. However the red LED never illuminates. I have recrimped the connections but the problem is internal. The switch checks out OK so it is just the reset device and I don't know what type of device it is or what it does or whether I can buy one without having to replace the who;e panel. Any help would be appreciated.

That's only for the gas operation isn't it? And while it's off - everything is ok.

I was under the impression that "reset" is simply a lamp - indicating that reset of the system is required.

What I have found is that switching the switch to on doesn't do anything until I bump this reset (which is wired in series with the switch.Most of the time it is open circuit but I am guessing that it momently closes to allow 12V to activate the heater. If I short it out of the circuit momently the heater starts, so I am wondering whether it is replaceable with a push button momentry action switch.

As GB said it is only for lighting the Gas Pilot. As soon as the pilot is lit the reset light goes out and the unit will run and be controlled by the thermostat.

Well....it looks like my switch - but maybe there's another system I don't know anything about - but there's no 12v with mine. 240v is switched on and off at the unit and gas is activated by turning this switch on. Whilst it is lighting, the light comes on....but goes off once the heater has lit. Only on gas. And if it's keeping on...you know it's not lighting properly and can do with a bit of a blowout due to dust and possibly wasps (The actual unit...not the switch).

To add to what Grubby said:

Looks the same as mine. I'm not sure why that light is called a reset unless they couldn't think of a more suitable word. To my mind it's only an indicator globe, wired in series so you know that the sparker down below is active. I believe that once the gas lights the circuit at the heater is interrupted and so the light goes out.
If you say the light never comes on, then wouldn't that indicate a faulty globe that in itself is causing a broken sparker circuit, hence no ignition. If you replace the globe with a switch you'll never know if the unit is working.

In the end, the whole switch/light assembly is ~50 bucks. Not a lot of money... Just saying.
