Portable Gas Hot Water

I've been looking at portable hot water systems and was wondering what others have to say about theirs.

 

The Coleman Hot Water on Demand uses a proprietary gas cylinder, so that's out.  But the Companion Aqua Cube looks good.  Slightly larger than others, but reviews are good.

There are so many to choose from.  The Hottap also looks good, and the price range on most is between $200 and 350-ish.

 

Any suggestions?

We have a Joolca HotTap Portable Water Heater and haven't had any problems, they are available from road Tech Marine. We have a forward folding camper so we are stuck for a lot of room but the Joolca bolts on to the forward compartment door and doesn't take up much space and connects to a 9Kg gas bottle. Hope this helps

Hottap for me. I did have a couple of minor issues but their after sales service is second to NONE. I bought their en-suite too which is really good. I would certainly purchase their system again if the need arises.

Hot Tap again here.
Bolted to outside of van. Shower opposite ext side at other end
with t piece to Mixer tap at sink.

Only thing I found was you need a decent pump not a $40 speshul.
and turn flow waaaay down.

Thanks everyone. I will away now and look more closely at the Hottap. Thats for the resounding recommendations.

Macka17, you said yours is bolted outside the van. Do you remove and pack it away for travelling or is it permanently mounted?

Hi. I screwed a small brass plate with two slots protruding out Onto the side of my caravan.  I slide the lug at the top rear of the Hottap onto it and then put a small padlock on to stop sticky fingers. Set up in seconds. Col P

Thanks all. I have seen the stands to mount it on the rear bumper which is the way I think I will go. Have had other great reports on the Hottap so am leaning towards that one. Many thanks for all the good advice.

Yep Barrrgr.
I left it there once. But too easy to remove. (others)

I use those slip on hose couplings and keep on bed when travelling.
ON waterproof bag. (Don't weigh much.)

I was going to mount on front. But angle of. Gas bottles. Window, all precluded from,
comfortably.
Too awkward at rear.

Side mount MAY look a bit funny.
But I'm bending up a sheet of Stainless from shed to mount on a S\S Piano hinge
with lock to cover it. (What I've got.)

They easy (with a carry handle too) to mount permanent or temp, to suit.

Rog has a 4.5kg gas bottle. and hangs his off rear of van where shower tent is.
then drops in back of ute (great wall) when not using.

Being gas and fumes. with NO flu. "I" Prefer to keep mine outside.

Thanks Mack17. Will place an order tonight. I thought the same...mounted on the back in a secure, vented box. If I do it right I could even have easy access to the knobs without uncovering it and it may not suffer the effects of the wind that I keep reading about. As long as it's well ventilated, perhaps with a top flue, it should be safe. I'll talk to the local caravan people on Friday. Thanks again.

 Hi ,are these systems good enough that you need to mix in cold water ,

and with two person average use ( showers and dishes)approximately how many days on a 9kg gas bottle?

Unless you are made of very stern stuff you will need a little cold or a huge flow rate to keep the temp bearable.

I am mounting my Hottap in a rear bumper box with lift up lid (to vent & protect back of van) and a door to access the tap and hoses. I will plumb water and gas straight off the van supply for normal use.  Discussed this with Hottap, after I bought it, they assured me it would be fine.  Used it on a wall in my shed for an extended period, no sign of any heat/exhaust/fumes etc....

A good thing.

 The HotTap and similar heaters have a variable control in the gas supply. I have used the HotTap and you adjust the control on the fromt to the temperature (displayed on the front) and it produces water to the required temperature.
