Plantar Fasciitis


Howdy all

Has anyone had and cured plantar fasciitis? Its really starting to bug me now, I've had it probably the best part of 8 months, and it will not fix. I had some electric shock treatment from a podiatrist, went off gluten, I ice it every opportunity and I've taken numerous rounds of anti inflammatories. I could go into this fabulous national park tomorrow, but I'm hesitant due to the pain it'll cause me having to hike into the varying sights/sites. Sick of it ruling my life. I used to be very active, now its excruciating to even get out of bed!!! (Not saying I'm bedridden lol). Did a 2klm over a bit of a rock today and now it's too sore to get up out of the chair. Tried doing nothing too.....but that's hard for me.

It took me a year to get over it...... (really painful on getting out of bed).

Bought new shoes with good firm arch supports, also I was also shown how to tape my foot by a Podiatrist, he did also suggest Orthotics (costly).
I taped my foot every day, even when not wearing shoes, worked for me.

I bought expensive orthotic liners to put in my shoes. Wore them for months with no improvement. Hot weather came &enclosed shoes too hot so I started wearing a pair of $5 Crocs. Within a few weeks symptoms all gone (this was years ago) & have not come back Alice

Yes....probably the one thing I haven't done....shoes....hate them. Podiatrist was always harping on about them. Geezzzz, we weren't born with shoes.
Taping might be the go. Tape the arch up?
I think I've had to do that before. Probably not a new thing really....I know I've had dramas before with closer to the ball of the foot also. 

I spotted some tape in my medical box yesterday.....off to try. Cheers.
Crocs will get a work out when I try wading in around these razor fish Alice.

Just taped my foot. Instant relief!!! I had a big roll of tape here. I remembered it after you said about it. I obviously have had this before and forgot (I had a LOT of trauma since 2003 that sort of cumulated with me running off to be a gypsy eventually)....so I'd forgotten I'd even had PF before until your strapping advice. 


Thanks. I can't believe I'd forgotten about that. It was probably for the 'ball bit' I'd suffered prior......now it's just switched to the heel. Maybe I can even do the ranges tomorrow!!!

Longer term fix is a couple of simple stretches, both hands flat against wall, door etc. one leg forward, one back, then push/stretch with both knees bend, then with one knee bend ,, one straight, then reverse sides, hold both for 10-20 seconds. Its on youtube.
2- put bad foot heel on floor, with toes up the wall or door jamb and push down for 10 seconds.
3- if sitting, straighten leg out and " pull " toes back towards fat belly,

4- ALL in moderation.

Cheers Craig - I'll look them up. I have been stretching calves etc.....they are mighty tight - some of the muscles are out of whack purely because I'm walking around it.
I got a hard dog ball thing with nobbles on it and roll that around, that acts as a massage. Also use a foot massager when I've got power.
Someone told me the other day it never goes. That's a bit depressing.........god forbid it pops out on the other foot for it taking too much strain from the other. I read of that happening.

Hi Grubby,
I did get som orthotic inserts as well. Our local University ( CSU, Thurgoona)has a course for Podiatrists, so you get a reduced rate for the students to practice on you. They are 3rd year so pretty good. I now wear something on feet 99% of time, real crocs are supposed to be good. The stretches definitely help and it is now only rarely that it hurts, so does " go away" but lurks I reckon. cheers Craig

I had this problem too. It takes ages to go but you must support your foot well all the time. My doctor said to put on my most comfortable shoes ( in my case a pair of good sneakers) as I got out of bed in the morning and wear them all day. It was hot in summer but worth it to get better. That was years ago but if I walk about barefoot all day I can feel it coming back so it is a lifetime thing. Good luck.

Hi Grubby gypsy-1st rule is do not wear/walk in thongs[foot variety!!] Sandals with straps are imperative! Only wear thongs in Park shower!
Also there is a brilliant foot Physio in Melbourne[Yes it's probably a long way from where you are nomading but worth informing you!] After assessment he'll give you exercises & invoke the no thongs rule & you'll be as good as new! good luck!

Am into three and a half months with the problem, but in both feet. Started hard at the Gym after I retired, two weeks into

the extreme exercises and couldn't walk, like walking on a knife, pain in the heels. Slowly improving only in the last couple of week's.

I did try the tennis ball but found it to direct so am using an impulse spray deod. can to roll my feet before standing when getting up in the morning and then a few times during the day. If it is extremely inflamed, try freezing a small plastic bottle of water like a 600ml pepsi bottle, wrap in a light towel and roll under the foot, a few times a day, works wonders.

Stretching like in other post, another stretch is the ballerina stretch where you place the top of your foot/toes on the floor and stretch, like a ballerina.

Taping, I have been shown by a number of people who have had the problem, how to tape. I have found that the best way is to use the Kinesiology sports tape, get from Chemist, as it stretches with movement and doesn't come off.   Cut an amount of about 8 inches. Fold in half, with taking the backing paper of, place the half mark under the middle of your foot the highest of the under arch, take the backing off, one side at a time, stick it to your arch, under the foot and stretch as much as possible up the foot and over the ankle (top of instep and up the leg a bit) and press down, don't stretch the last inch, just stick in in place, then do the same with the other side, bring it over stretching as much as possible to get as much support as possible, the other site will cross over the previous one and up the leg, you can leave it on this way for days, gives so much support.
