Umm electric brakes... eek!?

My car (Ford Falcon S/W) is currently in having the Red Arc electric brake controller thinggie fitted (they apparently ran out of time to finish it yesterday). Just been reading some comments and now I'm having an 'eek!' moment! When I get my car back, I can just plug the cable into my 1999 Jayco Starcraft Poptop and it should all just work - right?? (The model of van was apparently manufactired with everything required for an electric braking system (?). Thanks!

Not sure about Redarc, but for the Techonshas that I have used that's about right.

All that you need to do is to follow the simple steps in the user guide to adjust your controller to your vehicle & van.  Like .. adjust the power setting so that the wheels don't lock up and finally to set the 'boost' so that the van brakes come on just before the vehicle's brakes operate.

Might sound complex but if you follow the steps in the guides it's simple really.

I just had a look on line at the link below & find that the Redarc TowPro is indeed much simpler  ..

Perhaps you should get your installer to 'set it up' & run you thru the process until you are completely happy that you understand it.  Keep looking at the video until you are really confident with it.

There are a lots of other interesting/informative videos on Electric brakes at this site too.

Before driving off we always operate the manual over-ride briefly to ensure that the caravan brakes are properly connected and working. Trailer plug/sockets sometimes fail so it's good to know that the brakes will work when I need them.It also ensures I know where to find the manual over-ride if I need it in an emergency.

I have had two of the Red Arc thingies myself, now, and fitted several for friends and family.   My only advice is to ensure you know how to do that thing where you apply trailer brakes only, first, in an emergency situation.   Best to have a couple of practice goes at slow speed on a good quality dirt or gravel road.

Do you have a Breakaway system on your van - often people forget to check the battery is charged/charging.

I thought the blue/green flashing light was a fault... apparently not! haha!). Hopefully it is all sorted! Thank you!!

Thanks, nice for you to say so ...

These days before I tackle almost any new task I have a look on the net.

Amazing what's on there.

Careful though.  Like on Forums there are self appointed experts on everything.
