thanks for the interesting replies, so true. What are your thought on buying an ex rental camper van. They say they are well maintained, but they have high mileage, and been driven by some drivers who are not good drivers. I am tempted, but do have some reservations.
A few years ago we had an excellent TV show called "A River Somewhere" which focused on two guys going fishing in various rivers across Oz/NZ and the world.
I recall one programme when they were in NZ driving to a remote river and came to their turnoff on to a rough track; one of the guys (Rob Sitch) who was doing the voice-over said "We didn't have a four wheel drive but we had the next best thing... a hire car.") - caveat emptor.

My van is an ex-rental KEA. It had 90,000Ks on the clock and was 3 yrs old. and in immaculate condition.
It is in the company's interest to keep everything in good repair so they don't have breakdowns and call outs etc.
It now 9yrs old and has 195,000ks on the clock and believe me it has been to places that no rental van has ever been. Never left me in the middle of nowhere. (Yep, done the lap). No major repairs required, except for a set of wheel bearings. (Touch wood). I service it regularly.
I think its the same and no worse than buying anything second hand. You really can't tell how the owner before you used it. So you can only inspect it and hope for the best. Sometimes you get a good deal others not so good. Sometimes, its a good thing. The owner before you may have ironed out all the probs.
Bought an eight year old 4wd ex hire camper with 230,000 km on the clock. Didn't need a single thing to get a roadworthy, in fact the mechanic said how well it had been maintained. Hire companies can't afford breakdowns in remote locations.
