After purchasing the components, I started yesterday installing 6x extra USB and 1x 12v power points in the van. I am also installing a digital coaxial cable back to my spot in the van, coupled to a digital to analogue converter and then a head phone pre amp. All this so I can hear the TV. Its an early morning and evening project, as it is just too hot to do it during the day.
Using the USB points to charge phones, Ipad, Kindle and other stuff. The 12v socket is to run my computer.
Hi Dougwe, most TV's have a headphone socket, giving an audio out, but when you push a plug into it, the TV's speakers are disconnected. This is great if you are the only person using the TV, but if others also are watching, and they have no sound, they get upset. So I have to find another audio out that doesn't effect the speakers. On the Teac, the only other output is the digital coaxial connection. Using this output, I then have no volume control, the preamp just gives me a volume control, independent of the control on the TV.
Good project I have just finished wiring 12v and usb outlets in my van. Can you put up a link and photo of the preamp as it might be worth me doing with my hearing.

Dougwe are your earphones a Wifi type or physically connected by a cable, I'm going to have to get something like that as my wife is complaining more and more about how loud I have the TV due to my hearing ? It would also be handy if I wanted to watch something like the football when she went to bed.
I have a pr of GOOD Senheisser plug ins for music. and an old set of "Electrostat"
Head phones (Stax) for serious music.
Just recently bought a set of "Liquid Ears" bluetooth buds for lounge TV when Di on Comp and in bed.
$42 del.
Nice. But I find the range is only to halfway across kitchen. then they start breaking up.
Have to pause everything when going for coffee.
OK in a smaller\van area though. I'm talking around 18\20 ft straight line.
Di bought me a set of expensive ones. $130odd del.
After 3 months trying. they went in bin last week.
Most uncomfortable things ever.
Was going to warn you off them. But can't remember name of (Bummer)
If you happy with the "close to tele\tablet" plug in ones.
the Samsung white ones that come with their phones\Tablets etc.
are one of the better sound quality units on market.and around $20 to buy.
I use sometime (pre Bluetooth) with an extension cable, sitting in lounge.
THEY are very good with music too.

BB
Not Wifi BB, they connect to the earplug socket on TV so cuts out all sound to the room. I paid around $200 for them as I like good sound. The TV has stereo sound and get it through the ear buds. I got them from a JB lady in a HIfi shop :) I can't remember flavour but I think Senheisser or similar type name. They are red in colour and sound great. I also have and extension lead for them so I can lay back and enjoy.
Edit....I also use the same buds with my iPod for great sound as well.

Sort of related. Our main TV outputs audio to both speakers/headphones and a soundbar. I often use headphones at a volume high enough to combat industrial deafness while partner adjusts the soundbar to suit her.

The type of ear plug or headphone you use will depend entirely on your situation. Solo camper just use the headphone jack, although there has been a period of 12-124 months where TV manufacturers didn't fit a headphone jack. No deafness and mild deafness I guess the plugs or "on the ear" headphones are suitable. Open headphones are perhaps more comfortable, but no good if you want them loud, because everyone else can hear from them as well.
"On the ear" closed headphones for severe deafness, and over the ear headphones (preferably studio types) for profound deafness, as you can get some sound via sound conduction through the skull.
Prices for quality headphones is at about $250 up-wards, and the over the ear Senheisser wireless type would set you back about $500 up. I have been through 3 pairs of these, quite good except the headband broke on all of them.
While I hate the cords and being tethered, I have gone to the cord type, as they are cheaper to replace and better quality for the same bucks than wireless ones, and in a van there isn't much room anyway to get tangled up in.
Anyway I've stopped work, too hot in the van at the moment, even with the air con on.
Cooled down a bit, wires run under the floor and up beside the fridge to TV, wires run up the shelf, table where we sit. USB and other boxes mounted, If I wasn't short one special crimp fitting, there could have been a smoke test tomorrow, but will have to wait until mid week.
Thanks guys for the feedback I might see what I can get with a cord, a few of you mentioned Senheisser so I will check the internet to see what they are worth I don't really want to pay much more than $200 if I can get out of it. The way your using yours Dougwe is pretty much what I want to do, I suffer a bit from industrial deafness at certain frequencies especially in one ear but I don't really need to use a hearing aid just yet.

It sounds like what I need, Where did you get your hearing aid from, was it off the shelf? Did you have to do a test? I just got a quote for hearing aids $8,600.00 and 90% percentage of its usage is for TV.

Hi STI I just bought mine on eBay, just type in Siemens hearing aids in eBay search and you should find plenty of them. I actually got mine with free delivery for about $80. There is a very good thread on this site started by aussietraveller called hearing aids which is worth a read. and no you do not need a hearing test. Hope this helps Landy.

The earlier Sennheiser Headset seems to have had a weakness in the headbands where the charging contacts are. All of my sets were second hand to start with, as I couldn't afford the $500 or so for each pair. My headphones were on and off my head many times a night.

Thanks Dougwe I ended up buying a set of the new model over the ear Sennheiser HD 4.30i along with a 3.5mtr extension from JB Hi Fi for $190. The girl told me nowadays you need to buy the correct ones or the controls won't work on the headset when you connect them to your iphone or iPad i.e. the 4.30i is the model made for Apple and the 4.30 is for Samsung etc. Iana you were correct the Wifi version started at $499 - although that's probably better than paying out big money for hearing aids if you were only going to use them for watching TV.
Sorry the pictures are a bit dark, took them at the end of the day. The supply cable and the co-axial cable travel under the floor, the cable length was about 6 meters including going up to the TV. Installed 6 x USB ports and one 12v socket for the computer adaptor (thanks Dougwe). Got a couple of holes in the floor to seal up, and then that's another project off the list.
I have a small set back, testing the 12-17v converter for the computer, the computer complained, and no charging was evident. Closer examination revels the socket into the computer is different to the run of the mill type, and the correct connector, even though there are a lot of them that came with the package is not supplied. I will have to contact the maker and see if I can get the correct type.
I got sucked into getting my ears checked (wife complaing) now have hearing aids to go with my glasses which I also didn't think I needed it's now great to hear what people are talking about especially in group situations, get your hearing checked it might be the best thing you've done good luck danny
Thanks Hino, but I've been very deaf since early 20's, had both ears operated on, been told my next step is cochlear implants which I am not mad keen about. Can hear conversation but I am unable to hear the TV through my aids, must be something about the sound from these new TV's. I am pretty experienced with these hearing clinic rip offs and lack of knowledge and experience from the people that sell the aids.

Hello Ian
Concerning cochlear implants, make sure that you are on the pension, prior to obtaining them
Around the year 2000 or thereabouts, trying to save my hearing, doctor sent me to a specialist, to see what my options were
His advice was to, stay employed to keep Mrs Tony in the manner she is accustomed to, do not worry about hearing loss, as in the future he can give me cochlear implants
I asked him what level of hearing I would have with cochlear implants, he said less than I had then, and that you have cochlear implants, only after you have nearly lost all your hearing
I asked him about the price, he said approximately $20,000 for each ear, and you need two of them
I have no idea if the price has gone up or down since then
My private health insurance, Goldfields Medical Fund, recently been taken over by HBF, will give me around $700 each five years for hearing aids So private health insurance is not the answer to obtain hearing aids
I hope that you have obtained the connection you wanted to charge your laptop
As a side note Not knowing what your hearing aids and/or your telly are, some have a T-coil to help hear the telly
This link below to JayCar gives a cheap fix if you are missing a T-coil
