New to this

hi my husband and I are about to embark on our travelling career and were wondering what the average couple would spend per week out on the road, we only want to free park. Look forward to hearing from anyone

Hello Catark
May I be one of the first to welcome you to the forum

Your question is very easy, and also very hard to answer, as there are just too many variables

As we are all different, living in different situation, I can only give an example from my own experience

Four main expenditures are, in my opinion

  1. Food and entertainment
This will cost you slightly more than than you pay at home base, because at home base you will have access to the specials from the food/grog shops etc

  2. Accommodation
Recently I went on a ten week trip, using free and low cost camps, total cost to me for accommodation was less than $100

  3. Fuel
This is a very big variable as we all travel different amounts each week/month/year
In a recent ten week trip I travelled exactly 10,047 kilometres, since leaving my home base and then refilling my tank about 400 kilometres from home

  4. Incidentals
You will always have to save a bit of cash for the normal running of your rig, such as rego/insurance/maintenance
A wise person will also save a bit of cash for any unexpected problems

That is the best answer that I can give you, for my situation which is that I hope to be on the road six months of the year

I am sure that other will come along with some advice, and I know that some people use an excel program to estimate their expenditure, for their situation

I hope that you have many years of happy road trips ahead of you

G'day Catark,  and welcome to the forum.  Plenty of great advice and folks on here.  Don't forget to try out the two games - Who is This in the I digress section and Pick This Place in the general section.  'Pick this place' is a great way to find new places to explore.   smile

Your question is really a piece of string as a lot will depend on how often you move, eat out and how many attractions you wish to see.  Marion and I are still working so can't speak on long term camping costs personally.

Welcome to the gang Catark, enjoy here and out in the playground.

I am a full time GN but still trying to find the end of the piece of string. Some weeks are more or less than others though.

Keep Safe on the roads and out there.

It is like living at home you will spend what you can afford and you will survive .

Hello and welcome.

We find our groceries r the same as when we were home. On second thoughts, it is probably cheaper. No kids calling in for t.

Diesel depends as far as u drive that week

dentist, dr, chemist is same as home

water, about $12 per week if u do not want to drink local.

laundry, depends. U can hand wash, take your own washer or use laundrimat. Usually $5per load.

Rent, showgrounds up to $175per week, caravan parks $24to $80per night depends on time of year. Free camping, well thats free.

take away, depends on u

book/papers, same as home,

entertainment, depends on u.

tours, depends on u.

grog, same as home.

clothes, same as home.

gas, if free camping,  Bottle $20 every 12 days. That runs Stove n big fridge. Everyone is different though. We free camp n showground camp n ours lasts ages.

generator fuel, only used on rare occasions. Uses about 1litre per hour. If i remember correctly.

car repair, same as home.

caravan repair, same as home.

xmas, same as home.

hair cuts, same as home.

birthday family, same as home.

parking, like taking car only into town to shop n also parking outside public toilet u have to pay to park the car to do a piddle even. We usually park further down the road for free But occas. This is not possible.

toilet, depends what products u use n how often u use it. When in showgrounds we do not use it n when free camping there is sometimes a toilet.

we find we save heaps by not eating out.

hope this is helpful.
