I am wondering if anyone has a solution to a problem that my B-I-L is experiencing.
He travels extensively in rural areas where mobile reception can be very limited. On the advice of a country Telstra store he purchased a suitable phone that has an external antennae input. Don't know the model but it is a Blue Tick, NextG, Telstra phone. This is NOT a smart phone and it doesn't need to be. Having the external antennea connection has enabled him to get a much improved reception many times over. OK no problems so far!! BUT he has just upgraded his tug to a 2016 Series 70 Landcruiser and the bluetooth will NOT connect to his phone. It did connect OK to his previous tug (a BT-50) without a problem.
SO we are looking for a suitable phone that
A) has an external antennea for increased reception in rural areas
B) is able to be connected to a modern Bluetooth (Toyota) system in a new tug
C) is NOT a smart phone (I don't think that there are ANY smart phones with external antennae connection anyway)
D) able to be bought outright thus using his existing ($20/month) contract (calls and SMS only).
First, go to a Mazda Dealer and see if they can do an update on the poota for the phone. I have a 2014 Colorado and a Galaxy 6 phone and if I changed the phone to the 7 the Collie wouldn't connect. I was told I would have to get Holden to do an update.
Hope it gets sorted.

It appears that Toyota (it's a Landcruiser) have no solution to the problem so we are trying to tackle the issue from the other end. The only other thing that i have thought of (overnight) is to get a seperate Bluetooth device but that is a last resort.
I have a 70 series LC76 landcruiser with a 3rd party GPS/BT/Video/Radio (fits in where the factory one was and connects with every blue tooth phone I have tried) I have a smart phone (Tough Max its a ZTE) from Telstra with external antenna and blue tick. This works fine with blue tooth, I suggest the bluetooth phone you have should really work with the standard radio in your 70 series just find someone who knows how to get it to pair properly as bluetooth is a standard communication protocol and is the same in all devices.

Hi Marken, apparently some devices use a an energy saving version of bluetooth that won't recognise devices that run an older version. You may want to look up on google "problems with pairing bluetooth devices" there is a website that comes up called Techlicious and it covers pairing problems in some detail. Hope you can get it sorted...... BB
There is a Telstra(ZTE) smartphone that has an external antenna connection. I looked at it last week and it appears they do listen to customers now and then. This phone is more likely to have the later bluetooth software and should connect to any Toyota.
Thanks KFT. I have contacted Telstra to get price on the Tough Max ($456) and will contact my BIL to see if he wants to proceed with paying out a bit. Appreciate your help.
