Free camping in the Shire of Irwin

The current policy, adopted at an Ordinary Council Meeting on 24 September 2014, provides the following;

  1. Nature based camping is allowed on Council controlled land outside of Dongara Port Denison townsites centres at Cliff Head, Knobby Head, Fresh Water Point and Seven Mile Beach. Only travellers with Self Contained Vehicles are permitted at Seven Mile Beach as there are no toilets provided at this site. Camping is allowed for a maximum of 72 hours at all of these locations.
  2. Dongara Town Oval on Waldeck Street is available for a free overnight rest for travellers with Self Contained Vehicles, a dump waste point is provided and parking for oversized vehicles. Mobile power generators external to the vehicle should only be used up to two hours to top-up internal batteries and not operating after 10pm. Externally strung washing lines are not permitted. If dogs accompany campers the Dog Act 1976 and the Shire of Irwin Dog Local Law applies.
  3. Free camping is prohibited elsewhere within the Shire of Irwin.
  4. The Shire of Irwin may open a temporary overflow facility to accommodate the excess influx of visitors during peak tourist periods when existing accommodation providers are operating at or near full capacity (such as the Easter long weekend). This facility is provided at the Town Oval on Waldeck Street Dongara. A basic toilet block is opened for this period and an overnight fee is payable to the Ranger by all users.

Self Contained Vehicles must carry a minimum of 20 litres of fresh water, have waste (grey) water holding tank with minimum capacity of five litres per person or 15 litres per person if the vehicle is fitted with a shower, and have a portable toilet cassette, all waste must be retained within the confines of the vehicle and nothing released to ground.

I have stopped at some of those free camps, and spent money in the Dongara town site

Dongara Town Oval on Waldeck Street and Seven Mile are now closed, for the foreseeable future, for a review by the council. Don't hold your breath on them being reopened any time soon.

INTRODUCING PAID CAMPING

Effective Monday 22 March 2021, the Shire of Irwin will be implementing paid camping. This means fees will be applied to all camping along Indian Ocean Drive within the Shire of Irwin.

If you are a ratepayer in the Shire of Irwin, you are entitled to 10 x nights camping at no charge each financial year. All other visitors will be charged $20 per vehicle per night.

Ratepayers can obtain camping vouchers by contacting the Shire Administration Office in person or by calling 9927 0000. Vouchers can be collected in person, sent via email or posted to the ratepayer's residential address.

Well done, miserable Shire of Irwin. Puts you right up there with the the other "anti free camps" brigade, like the Shire of Plantagenet, Mt Barker. Easy drive through both places to not stop and spend any dollars.

No Tony, Not feeling any more entitled than any other Aussie Cobber. Fact is, not all caravanner's wish to be dictated to by Shires with vested interest (or influenced by) caravan park owners who could not care less about other town business's in their towns that loose out as a result. It is not about entitlement, it is about freedom of choice. A bit like using a generator eh. Safe travels Cobber.

Does anybody from that area, know why or how, the free camps have been stopped

There may be a valid reason, such as people staying in the free camps, but not spending in the town
