I read somewhere recently that these should be replaced "occasionally"
I am hoping that someone out there who knows heaps more about gas than I do (that is most people) can tell me whether this is true and if so quantify "occassionally"

A few yrs ago. the gas had extra "tar?" in it,
And clogged the regulators.
Very frequent changing of in those days.
I've only ever swapped one. Second hand van Probaly 20 yrs old (and looked it.
Hose leaking. so I swapped both.
Prev Roadstar Near 15 yrs. 2 of them. Still fine. This van '99 model.
Changed hoses for sheathed, Reg's look fine and go the same.
Just check with soapy water on connections occasionally.
I went through 3 regulators in my motorhome within 2 years. Spent a lot of time on forums at the time to sort the regulator problem. Conclusion was Plasticizer in the flexible hoses leaches out like a gooey oil and expands the rubber seats in the regulators. I sourced new stainless steel INNER hoses and have had no more problems in 4 years.

Fella in van next to me a few weeks back, found no gas getting through one day. He called out a gas fitter, and it was found that the inside of the flexible tubes had leeched into the regulator and gunked it up. The gas fitter did make the point that he has only seen this in the 'cheap chinese' brands. I have never had any problem so far myself in 20 something years of caravanning.
Cheers, John.

Had heard about the flexible hose problem, so had them replaced by copper tubing. We replaced regulator as we had problem with hot water (Suburban) igniting then going out, ended up not being the problem.
Had more to do with the burner tube and electrodes to light the flame

Occasionally for me was three years
Fitted new regulator, (purchased from local caravan outlet), 2014 Failed while crossing Nullarbor, 2017
But I did not fit new pigtail hoses, when I changed the regulator, I assume the hoses were made in 2006

So thanks for that info above, rasco, as it was something that I, and perhaps others, were not aware of
I believe that my problem was possibly a bad LPG bottle When the gas stopped flowing, and I turned off the bottle, I found that the hose was pressurised, and some stuff the colour of mustard came out, from the hose Which I assumed had come out of the bad bottle
I changed my regulator, and hoses
I had heard about placing the old regulator in hot water, to softer the gunk, and blow out with low pressure air, this did not work for me
I cut open the regulator, with the trusty old hacksaw I found exactly what rasco had said, The rubber on the high pressure pivot arm, had expanded, taking away all the free play, and not allowing the gas to flow through the orifice, to the low pressure side
I was going to keep my pigtail hoses, but after reading this post, I cut them open They have a sticker saying Australia made Although both looked OK to my old eyes There was one 50 mm section in each hose, which was softish
For me, I had purchased the regulator with tork fasteners, (same type as the one in the link, which rasco put up), so next time at least a gas fitter will be able to take it apart
thanks for that info. I had assumed that the replacement was necessary to avoid a leakage or some other dire event. Ours continues to work as it should but I will now have a good idea of what to do if the gas stops flowing.

It depends upon whether you have the regulator higher than the bottles or not. My regulator has lasted 14 years. If the regulator is higher than the bottles then any gunk in the gas will run back down the pigtails to the bottle and not clog the regulator.
