Nullabour.

Have now for the first time crossed the Nullabour. Had a slow leak on one caravan tyre due to some object damaging the wall of the tyre. Generally speaking it has been great. Rain has always been in front of me. Puddles on the side of the road. Ellison next stop. Traffic all seems to be heading west. Great fun.

Hi Charleark. Congratulations on your first crossing. Yes sometimes you have a win with the rain. Bad luck about the tire. Could have been worse though.

Cheers, John.

I came over from the east a couple of weeks ago just before the rain and everyone seemed to be heading east then! It is a lovely road, especially compared to the road out of Kalgoorlie heading west to Perth. Some great little free camps to stay at using Wikicamps. Loved Streaky Bay down on the Eyre peninsula before the crossing but there are lots of other gems down there if you have already gone by Streaky. It feels like a rite of passage ticked off the list having done the Nullarbor, eh? (well it does for me anyway) Hope the tyre is fixed now.
Cheers, Andy

Hi, I am a new female solo member heading across the Nullabour late June. Any advice on safe free camps and any general advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

Plenty of stopped areas especially on western side . Can pull off nearly any where you want . Strange thing is you think everyone is heading in opposite direction !! Till you realise people traveling in your direction don't pass each other !! Lol You get ok coverage too . We stopped near tower or where we had phone signal . Just for security and keeping in contact with family back home .

We have just crossed east to west did not free camp, but as Aus-Kiwi says heaps of spots on the Western side. Last water we were able to fill was at Ceduna next was at a caravan park in Norseman. As well as our on-board toilet, we used toilets at roadhouses. Rest stop toilets and dump points after ****lebiddy. Border village has a quarantine check point for fruit and veggies among other items. There are no fresh fruit or veggies until Norseman. My partner had a Telstra phone with 3g coverage on and off for most of the time, I had an Optus phone with no coverage until after Norseman
Thoroughly enjoyed the journey, with no hassles. Hope you have the same experience

Wal

Thanks to the advice re crossing the Nullabor. I completed the trip successfully and met some great people on the way. I did stay at the caravan parks at roadhouses as they were cheap enough as I have solar power. I went on to Albany and Margaret River and then on to Mandurah were I have been staying with relos. In a couple of weeks I am off north to see the dolphins at Monkey Mia. No plans after that...

Hi Katz,

Great to hear you crossed the Nullarbor OK, I found it a great experience especially the OMG 'Great Australian Bight' photos, there were plenty of fellow travellers on the same path too!  May I suggest when you head North a place to drop into before you get to Broome is a farm stay just south of there @ BARNS HILL FARM STAY.   (In the CAMP 8 book it is camp site #459 A good dirt road into the property so even a standard 2WD can do it.)     A B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L spot to camp with fabulous sunsets and a rock pool & power/ showers & toilets for a reasonable cost!  See the photos attached, I took them last year on my sole trip around the 'loop road' of OZ.  Good travels and stay safe..Gwynnie@matildatraveller  floating.gif

HI

I am looking to do the Nullabour crossing in 2018, retired so plenty of time to plan and not confined to a specific time of year. Hence my question, as a first time crosser, what time of year is best to do the trip. I appreciate there is weather and headwind issues which i have done some research on and I also acknowledge that there are no guarantees that wind or weather pattens will necessarily repeat the following year. Currently thinking May / June or November / December 2018.  Happy to receive any advice around time of year to travel or another traps for first timers. Driving a 2014 Grand Jeep Cherokee and a 19.2 Jaco 2014 caravan, duel wheels.

Thanks Phil

Any crossing is a good crossing, we have done it well over 30 times since 1978 now.  We have had all conditions, rain, hail, wind etc.  Just ride with it, if head winds drive a bit slower or earlier in the morning or sit a couple days.  it will change.

I heard a good philosophy recently..."there is no such thing as bad weather, just wrong clothing"!  I liked that.

We are going across again in January for the 12 hour race at Bathurst.  Can't wait.

<edit>  If you like Oysters then SA west coast is for you.smile
