What do you people who "play in the dust" do to keep dust (inc bull dust) out of the gas/electric hot water service & fridge vents? On our Eagle, I never ran the smaller fridge while we were travelling (used it as an esky) & had exterior covers to keep the dust out.
With our Discovery, I taped the forward facing vent on the HWS & covered the bottom vent of the fridge (3way Dometic), but would like to do something more permanent. Both worked ok at the next stop (the fridge was on the whole time).

Really interested to hear what people do about dust. We have major problems with dust getting in. We found a large hole for water pipes at the back of the external shower which allowed dust into the kitchen cupboards. Stuffed rags etc into it but dust still gets in through the many vents.
We carry an old pillow that we leave in step recess (that's where our low point gas vent is - in back of step) only when we are driving on dusty/gravel roads. Keep in back of Patrol rest of the time - handy for jamming in to stop anything rattling.

THAT question has been around since the first one ever built.
I Normally ran Roadstars. that are pretty well made and joints fitting flush.
When on Bulldust and Corrugations. (A lot of the time over the yrs.)
Normally I opened front vent. Which I had a taller snorkel made to fit.
to get UP higher.
Flat plastic sheets cut to size. Then silver taped over.
covering bottom door vents. Wall vents. Side Stove fan vent.
Fridge\Aircond breathers. (12v fridge, No flu needed)
Then ran silver tape round all windows. Door Front boot and battery box.
ALl under floor holes were already sealed with Sika, Including round the inside seams of wheel arches. (You'd be surprised about that one with some vans)
Just remember to remove the one at bottom of step in case gas leak during night.
Fridge and Aircond.
Then Recover Whichever again next morn.
I ALWAYS Mastic paint\seal, complete bottom of van.
and Sika All holes in floor, when first acquired.
Then every 5 yrs or so.
Roof and walls, more often.
Have Velcro around step vent . I fit a foam filter from House Air conditioner over vent when in dusty areas.. Mainly when going to station stays.. My old Fuso motorhome had a vent in roof facing forward . I would open it to try and put positive pressure inside to prevent leaks
Hang on a minute chaps, I'm not worried about the dust getting into the van proper (nil to very minimal at the moment) - I'm worried about the critical points where there are very small jets (one cannot see the hole in the gas jet of a 3way fridge but dust can be very small too) & I guess the HWS is similar.
Do I make a cover from vinyl or cardboard & just tape it up over the unit/vent?
Cheers

If you can create positive pressure in the van it will stop the dust.
I think a product available is called a pressure hatch, may not be something youll want to fit unless your happy cutting holes in the van though...
Hope this helps.

Thanks Gary, Kiwi,
I doubt whether Pat will allow me to cut any holes in the van - I tried to do that to cool the aux battery in the Patrol. The idea wasn't well received!!
The oiling of the foam sounds good & I recall you mentioning using the air-conditioning filter material as well.
I hope you don't mind but the ideas expressed by the other members will be passed on to some of my friends who have the "U-beaut" vent in the step area.
Your advice makes this forum VERY worthwhile.
