I don't know the answer and but couldn't you get that from your engineer ?

B4 you go ANY further.
Contact Van MFG with chassis no.

Ask if THAT chassis can take 2 ton or more.

Most are built to a price. and sized to suit.
Don't waste money on upgrading a chassis that won't be legal.

It WILL have it's capacity stamped on it somewhere. (Usually Preston)
Sometimes a little plate rivetted to Drawbar side.

But the MFG will have record, They keep such of every van out the door.

If you can and do get the axle upgraded to a 2 ton axle, then you will need to get your ATM increased by the engineer.

You will also need to possibly upgrade the tyres to get higher weight rating tyres to meet the new weights.

You can't just get a new axle and then load the van up.

Everything goes in there.
Chassis. welded on Spring hanger yokes. Springs
. Axle\s, HUBS and brakes. (Hub Dia controls it too.)

But Please DO check Chassis spec's first. They ALL different
for differing models.
Even the drawbars and ball mounting plates.

Good quality MFG van, Probably. Not a problem.
but the cheaper ones ARE built to spec's and price.
Just check first. I'm probably wrong hey.

Thank you for your replies, I have spoken to both the engineer and the mechanic who will do the job, with all necessary documentation for the Roads and traffic mob and have checked the chassis and other areas and are in agreement that the van is quite able to take the upgrade to a 2 tonne axle, the engineer stated that his paperwork will include the increase to the ATM. Again thank you for your advice.

I did a similar exercise. I replaced a 1600 kg axle with a 2,000 one. The engineer offered me an ATM 2200 kg and a GVM of 1900 kg. The increase in load was not the full increase in the ATM. There was a matter of the extra 30 kg weight of the axle to take into account.

Thanks for your information on your Van Peter, hope all is well and I am hoping for the same result. Question; if the ATM is over 2000 kg do I need a breakaway outfit.

It is the GTM that decides whether the van requires a breakaway controller or not. The following is from VSB-01 15.2 All other trailers that do not exceed 4.5 tonnes ATM

Every trailer over 2 tonnes GTM must have brakes operating on all wheels. The brake system must cause
immediate application of the trailer brakes in the event of the trailer becoming detached from the
towing vehicle. Under these circumstances, the brakes must remain applied for at least 15 minutes.
