Suspension upgrade for Tug


we have a '92 Landcruuser, 4lt diesel, manual transmission.  Vehicle was originally my father's and he had pump-up or pillow suspension added as he towed a 21' van. Tug has travelled some 290,000 km ..... regularly serviced and is in A1 Nic.

The "pillows" are well past their "use-by" date and are ineffective ...... So we are wondering .... Should I replace the "pillows" or should I ditch them and install heavy duty springs, or a combination of sorts???

we tow a 2097 Jayco Poptop 17' (plus A-frame) currently, but the future will see an upgrade to a newer unit that will, naturally, be bigger/heavier

Can replace the pillows . Just DONT pump much pressure into them . 5 to 10 Lb is usually enough . Too much adds weight,concentrates on one area ! Bad news for chassis !! At the age depending on your budget ? Re-set or extra leaf spring depending on load and spring tension ? New shocks if original too !

If veh in good shape. Mechanically and physically.
They not a bad old truck (for a Toyota) (80 ser??.)

Get it checked out and make sure it good mechanically for the next decade.
290km is nothing IF properly
egularly, serviced. with DECENT oils.

If not changing it to something else?.

Price a rebuilt Head. Injectors. Fuel Pump and lines.
(Turbo??) rebuild. or fit one with Intercooler.
It'll be a new rig with lots more power.
AND ECONOMY....

That vintage. Suspension IS SHAGGED.
replace, Springs.Torsion bars front?. Shocks.
Stay under around 2.2\2.3ton MAX..with van
And you'll have the eqiv to a near new tug
which'll take you anywhere.

Seats Rooted ??.
Swap out for basic Orthopedic ones. and you DO.
Float on air.

Any van MUCH heavier than that.
UPgrade your tug.
and have fun. But get rig to be safe.

Get weight of type\size of van B4 you play with tug or change it.
And be SENSIBLE with the tow weights..

2.5 ton pretty over limits for that tug safely.
I think their limits then were 5000lb.

Hi Macka17,

The 'cruiser is in tip-top condition. Regularly serviced ... twice each year whether she needs it or not.  All shockers are new, bearings, etc. redone about 20,000k ago, fuel pump, injectors, and other replaced. I  reckon is "as good as new"

The pump up shockers at rear are shot, and haven't been "inflated" for at least 7 years... until now (having only just purchased a van) there hadn't been a need. Just thinking that to enable a "leveller" ride an upgrade of suspension could be a good thing .... Vehicle is of HIGH sentimental value so a change isn't being contemplated ... besides she's not quite run in yet.

current 'van has ATM of 1494kg, GTM of 1333kg, Tare Mass 1194kg.  Considering new van to be about 21' to 23' with shower & wc, so we expect it to be a tad heavier, but will be within the tug's tow weight range.

 Your Landcruiser is one of the earlier models with the smaller brakes. It's tow rating is only 2270 kg and 250 kg on the ball (or 2500/250 with pintle tow-bar.) You will have to go easy on any upgrade in van weight. Toyota have fairly good suspension, the only reason for upgrading it would only be to carry overloads that the authorities are not keen on. I would not bother replacing the airbags but replace the springs if they are not up to specification.

Just as PeterD says. watch your weight with any van

Maybe, improve susp. Leaves and shocks if necessary,

And best of enjoyment in your travels.

That is about the best of the Tojo's. Apart from the old 60 ser.
I had one of them. Then a GQ.
