Suburban hot water heater trips on 240Volts

Have a problem on the road at present with intermittent tripping of 240 volt operation of heater on Jayco van.

Unit trips the the safety fuse quite often for no reason after heating for several hours or days, waiting for it to always trip which has now occurred.

Are we looking at a heater coil replacement or is there another possible explanation? Will break out the multi-meter tomorrow so some advise on expected resistance of element would be useful.

Stuck in Kingaroy at present for a few days so would like to get is sorted.

Thanks,

Brian

Hi Brian
Not had that problem but had the fridge tripping out all the time on 240V. Had nothing to do with the fridge. A wire under the seat where the control is was intermittently touching the metal wall. Electrician found it in 5 minutes with his multimeter, Hope yours is a simple one too

I expect it is the heating Element - I had a similar problem and it was the element.  To change it, you require  a very big Tube Spanner. Probably  as cheap to take it to your local repairer a the spanner is quite expensive.

There is a repairer in Kingaroy, if you ask around.

Hi Brian,

We had big problems in our new Jayco. Lose wiring was the cause. get an electrican to go over it with A multimeter. Ours was in the power inlet. Only one of three wires came out with the wall plug.crycrycry.

We also had the same problem on the Nullabour a few years back with our Jayco so we switched off the electricity supply to the tank and heated water with Gas till we reached Perth and had a new element fitted there.

Thanks all, I have a new element being shipped to Maryborough with box spanner guess that's part of life on the road and couldn't have picked a nicer place to spend an extra week waiting for parts.
Cheers,
Brian

Element fitted today and all good, old element had same resistance as new (approx 41 ohms) however the insulation to the nut portion that screws into the heater was shot causing an earth leakage and occasional trip and finally full time trips.
Thanks for comments element on-line was $43 but spanner was $37 plus the express delivery ($20) was still cheaper than a few more days at the van park.

Thanks Mal,
Had organised the new element from Kingaroy and didn't think to check Tin Can Bay after I found I couldn't get one in Maryborough. Saw van place yesterday, loved the fish and chips as well on the esplanade.
