Brake Controllers

Hi, Wondering if i I can get a quick response re brake controllers, I have read a lot and have decided to go with a Red Arc Tow Pro Elite, The price of the unit is $239.00 and cheaper than the Tekonsha P3 and a sparkie will fit it for a supply and fit price of $650.00. I feel that this is exorbitant as I can fit it myself, but is this a good unit and worth the money. Thanks in advance.

Bob

I went for the P3 & am very happy.  Got it on line at a good price & self installed. Easy Peasy.

A trailer specialist that I went to on another issue wasn't a fan of the Redarc product, suggested that he had replaced a number of burnt out magnets (I think) on Redarc set ups.  I didn't follow up the claim with him as I had the P3.

I would have thought that all Redarc product are pretty good but perhaps somewhat dear.

Hi Abner, I have the tow pro elite, what a great unit. I fitted myself in less than 2 hours, very easy.

I've used Tekonsha forever.
Spoken to a couple on the Tow Pro.
one was iffy about his.

P3. I had since that model came out.

This Ute with 2 ton van.
Have the basic self adjust model. $150.
and a carton for sparkie mate to install.

They ALL stop your van, when set up properly.
Why waste the extra.
Spend it on something useful. Like a bottle of single malt.

I just spent $230 on a bottle of Taliskers 18yr.

Nectar........

MUCH better value for your money.
You do not need all these top line, fancy units.
They all just have more electronics in there to go wrong.

ALL are basically the same. With extra's. which are not NEEDED.... Just wanted?.

Whoops.
Spell check needed.

$130 per. 80ish for 12yr and $72 for Dark Storm.
They nearly all gone after the Melbourne, then Cowboys games.

Still have 2\3rds of a 12 yr old.
Bronc's game this week will finish that off.

Not a bad. Fairly unknown brew that lot Ain't they.
From that tiny "Isle of Skye"
So my palate tells me.

Mate's an Aircrew on International flights.
He drops a bottle of Japanese scotch in occasionally.
Bit sharp. But not too sad for the price.

Sorta think my lot fall off backs of trucks in Melb.
But who am I to whinge.

Haggis and some Irish Single malts are my fav..
I've got a coupla bottles of Johnny Black. Double black, in cupboard..
Coke mixers for me nowadays.

I used to rate the Double too.

It was SOOOOOOOO Gud. Watching that big dumb Sharks Forward drop the ball
and gift the game to Cowboys though.
Bloody Magic I reckon.

Just say a prayer that Bronc's remember to play footie this week hey.

The tow pro elite is an excellent choice and at the cutting end of technology. The unit itself is solid state and can be hard mounted under the dash out of sight with the adjusting knob mounted into the dash. Wiring up is easy, why not do it yourself.Full instructions are included. Check out the prices on e-bay.

Can't remember what make mine is but it has a remote activator and strength adjuster on it . The unit is under the dash and I have mounted the control button just above the hand brake . That way if I need to use it it's just below my fingers . Not down under the dash . I did spend a bit extra but it makes things safer for me

The subject has been mORE than covered. Prior to.

Tekonsha MORE than good.

Redarc. New kid on the block.
Some will always try.

Not necessarily better.
just different hey. Some can't help themselves.

Me' I stick with the known in most things.
Don't get TOO many surprises then.

hi
The only advantage to a Redarc unit is it has a remote head unit allowing fitting into tighter places for the control Knob . THATS IT !!!

The Prodigy and P3 are more adjustable eg the program re boost allows greater control of braking ,you can set max brake plus brake punch [brake amount on first application ]
This reason alone makes it a winner over the Redarc

I think you talk with forked tongue. What was that old piece of rubbish where the pendulum just controlled which of the two power control levers controlled the braking effort? It certainly was not branded Tekonsha. You were still arguing that they were the bees knees years after the rest of us had binned them.

YES Pete.

It WAS the ducks guts till Tekonsha came out. yes.
10 yrs and more ago..

AND. They did do a very good job when set up.

At a fraction of the price of the later models.(Tekonsha)

Hence I still used till NEEDING a replacement.

Not just for the sake of.

I've had a P3 since then. With latest a Prodigy.

Quite happy.
Can adjust on the move

and it DOES. Pull my rig up on the manual lever.

(The Patrol and 6.5m)   This rig too.

If the Redarc are anywhere near as good as their Solenoid Dual Battery unit.
They leave a bit to be desired.

"I" was talking up. and had.
An Electronic one of those. Loooong b4 Redarc brought out an update.
Funny that.
We can't all be right ALL the time hey.
just most of. chuckle.

Tekonsha had proportional models out in the early 90s.

We had a RedArc fitted when we got our new car trailer, which has electric brakes. Easy to operate - control well placed - purchase and fitting =- $659.00, not mechanical so had to get it fitted.

 Gee that's dear.

My Tekonsha P3 Prodigy cost $187 delivered from Ebay.

Simple install on GQ Patrol.  Perhaps one of the few advantages of the old 'Analogue' vehicles.

Another good reason NOT to go with Have the latest... Flow. hey.

Cupie. Mine was $150ish from memory Locally.
Carton to install. On a late model electronic ute.

They're pretty easy if you can read instructions. with a crimper\solder.

Not going to argue Pete.

My reasonaing. as above. was that the one I had did a great. SAFE job.
NO NEED to replace with later models. Just to be one.
I was just saying that the earlier models. (Mine)
still did a great job without the extra money costs. "Look what I got syndrome"
As in the NEW items Redarc..
OK if you need to change.

Same as my UTE. I bought a 2010 model. Not cause I can't afford a new\late one. I can. Plus.
BUT because I.. wanted a smaller unit than my Patrol.
to suit smaller van and wife's driving comfort.
and the D-Max have the PROVEN reputation.

New is not always the best mate. Whoops sorry.
Delete that last word. You may take offence chuckle.

Hi Cupie - may seem dear - but when you are not at all mechanically minded like my Billy, you got to pay to get these things done.  We were quite happy with the price.  We had the RedArc dual battery system in our 4wd in my "other life".  Husband fitted it, no probs.

Hi All, I fitted the Tow Pro Elite to the Pajero, Bought the wire @ $100.00, plus heavy wire to the battery, resettable 30amp circuit braker, pulled the dash apart to fit the controller and drill a hole for the remote head, in took about 3 hrs plus another hour to remove the 2nd battery to get the wires through the dash, the unit cost $237.00, and if I had paid a tech to do it it would have been $500-$600.00 so I can see where the cost is involved. I was not going to pay that so I class work time on my car as free, its the parts cost that is the killer plus the labour charge. The thing is I know where everything is and that it's done properly.

Yes Bob when you itemise all the costs & time it does add up.

In my case the wire was already there from a previous controller, so no cost; I got the circuit breaker on line for a lot less than $20 (can't remember the exact price); the installation on the Patrol was a simple process of just screwing the provided bracket to the dash.

Might be different for a new installation in a new vehicle.  The main issues would I suppose, making sure that it didn't interfere with the various computers.
