Low satellite signal levels for WA ABC channels

I am having a problem with recording ABC WA programs on my Altech DSR4639 satellite receiver. I get a message saying that there's a problem with the signal. The problem is occurring at my current location of Beverley, east of Perth, and I also experienced it when I was at the Seabird get-together.

The problem is that although I can view the WA ABC channels (2, 21, 22, 23 & 24) just fine, the signal level for each of them is only 55% and signal quality 68%. I recently visited Access Antennas in Osborne Park (from where I purchased my satt gear a few years ago) and asked them if they had come across this problem but they weren't aware of any issues, suggesting that the Altech receiver won't record if the signal level or quality for that channel is below 60%. Looking into it further, I've discovered that all of the affected channels are being transmitted from a transponder with a frequency of 12647 MHz (also includes channel 221 ABC HD NSW, 231 ABC HD Vic and the VAST info channel 800). However, channel 801 (D3 Tuning channel with the coloured bars) is on a transponder frequency of 11928 MHz and shows signal quality of 87% and signal level of 100%.

The signal from the dish (80cm) according to my Satlink 6933 is 84% intensity and 80% quality which seems to be about the best I can get.

There is no problem recording other channels, only those transmitted on 12647 MHz.

I can get around the problem of recording an ABC program by using ABC Qld (241) which is on another transponder and has SQ/SL of 87% and 100% respectively, just need to remember the two-hour time difference.

Can anyone explain what's causing this - is it the receiver, the dish, LNB or something else.

Cheers
Joe

G'day Joe,

The figures you quote from your dish and those observed at your decoder are most likely close to being correct. I would suggest that the issue could be as simple as tweaking the dish slightly to improve the aim towards the transponder you seek although the only way to do this correctly will be with a spectrum analyser for the frequencies involved.

The C1 bird is fairly old now and some of the equipment may not be at peak performance.

Tweak the little thing on end of stick in dish. (LNB? or something.
memory gone walkabout again. lost the index)

I believe Left was the way mainly (a few yrs ago) Fractionally.

There are several differing freq.s with them.
ALSO Different dish shapes, size\shape. Made a difference.

I found the large (full size ) OVAL one gave 99.9% coverage everywhere.
But that was Pre "Vast".

Haven't bothered since. Just movies and recorded shows.
Plus same on net in range.
Just trying a free 2 weeks on Amazon Prime at present.

Yeeeeea. Maybe.

Just another one with same content so far.
4 days in.
Quality good though. Not pixellations like some.

Thanks for the reply, Frank. I'm now in another location, closer to Perth, and still have the same issue. I'll be doing a farm-sit next week so will have a bit of time to do some tweaking. It's strange that when I was in the eastern states earlier this year I often recorded programs from the ABC WA channel as a form of time-shifting, and had no problems then.

And also thanks to Macka for his response - I forgot that I have a spare LNB packed away somewhere so I'll try that once I've found it; also the shape of the dish struck a chord. One of the GNs at Seabird has an oval dish and his signal reception was higher than I was getting with mine, which is one of those that has the curved sides and straight top and bottom edges.

Cheers
Joe
