we travel in our campervan for about 4 months each year and would like some feedback on travel insurance used by fellow travellers. We have not had travel insurance previously but on a recent trip we did have to return home suddenly and we lost a fair amount on pre-paid deposits. Any advice on reasonable cost travel insurance companies for domestic travel would be appreciated.

I must admit that travel insurance of that nature had never occurred to me.

We take out travel insurance when we fly anywhere eg overseas, closer to home eg Norfolk Island & Lord Howe Island (Sunday). Even with normal airline flights we take out the airlines' insurance in case of sickness. It is a minefield to go through however, as these companies (eg Virgin) use overseas call centres - with language issues!
With normal driving holidays we don't take it out as we wait until we get to a location before taking out "options". For long term Aussie trips, the cost would be prohibitive especially if you have pre-existing conditions.
We generally use RACQ - had to use them for a very slight mishap in England - no problems whatsoever.

In 2015 when I looked into travel insurance before doing 3 1/2 months touring in Australia I couldn't get travel insurance for that length of time. It maybe different now as a couple years have passed.
Just a by the bye on a different type of insurance - Home and Contents. Some insurers only cover your home for up to 60 days if unoccupied for an extended period of time. Check your policy if no one will be staying overnight, at any time. in your home whilst away for long periods of time.

I have never had travel insurance for any road trips within Australia
Also as others have said above, I do not pre-pay any deposits, before I get there
The reason for this, is that someone may tell you of a good place to see along the road
If you have pre-booked something, you may have to give a good place a miss, or double back at a later time
Welcome to the forum Oldies check with your credit card provider whether free insurance cover is provided when you pay for your travel using your card (this can also include the excess waiver on hire cars).
