Hi baglimit2002 - might just have to call you BL if that's ok - depends on the water you are putting through your system - here in WA for instance there is a lot of sandstone in the bore water, so it corrodes up pretty quickly - we did ours about six months ago, and will check it when we are next stopped for a few days. Will have the spare one waiting, of course. So yours could be on the way out, best to do a new one anyway. First one we changed, supplier kept it as a sample of how bad they can get - it was about as thick as a small knitting needle.

if it is not wearing out then its not working to protect the tanks etc.
I buy a few at caravan shows and if they are on special from time to time usually around $20 then.
In WA mine lasts about 6 to 12 months depending on how much bore water it gets. And I replace it once it is half worn away. The surface as it ages becomes hard and contaminated and therefore not fully effective. Good to flush the tank out at the same time with the garden hose.

Being new to the Suburban water heater I will be checking the Anode every 3 months for the first 12 months just to see how it is going. I have a spare Anode waiting for when I need to replace it. I will then get another spare ready for the next change over. The tank will get a flush out each time I check as well. I will probably check it every 6 months after that.

Don't forget to depressurise the tank before removing it. DAMHIK.

We surmise how you know Neil - Coz we've all done it at least once - It does however get all the gunk out of the bottom of the tank.

If your looking at buying/replacing a caravan/motorhome HW service, have a good look at the Truma gas/electric 14 litre unit, stainless tank, no anode to replace.

However get it installed by someone who knows what they're doing, have heard of handyman installations splitting/bursting tanks.

We've had one for about 10 years, excellent unit, very reliable. smile

Whilst on this subject of Anodes.
What is the procdure that you go through to relpace the anode/Never done one be for and looking at changing mine as i know its done.Van is abv 08/16 New Age Manta Ray 19er S/e. TIA

Thanks John one more question i have read that when anode is removed otheres flush the hot water system how is this done and is tank water on van ok to use or connect to mains pressure to do this?

New to all this ....................................

Gday...

Yep, with the anode removed, insert a hose into the hole and turn on the tap, forcing water back into the HWS.

This stirs up any gunk left inside and it will flow out the anode hole ... of course, ya gotta remove the hose periodically to allow the water to flow back out.

You will get the hang on it.

This video will also help - start at 5.30min along for the flushing - you don't need a commercial unit just a hose without any fitting on the end will do.

How do you depressurise the tank?

Been told lift the lever on pressure valve others have said turn hot water taps on

Yes and dont forget to turn the power off or disconnect your van from 240 v supply.
