I replaced our anode for the first time after the first big trip 12 months back Now.
After running the hose in the bottom of the tank to flush all the gunk out. I decided to leave the water heater dry with the new anode installed ready to fill and go on the next trip.
Q. Is this Good for the system. To my way of thinking its saving the anode and the water heater in between trips. Good or bad.

I was told by the person that installed my new Suburban water heater to make sure I use it from time to time as they are not designed to sit idle and dry for lengthy times. I have great trust in the person so while I am house sitting and use the house shower, once a week I use the TeePee shower. In my case it is also testing it on mains water pressure and my tank water via the pump, gas and 240v heating. All weeks a treat and it's great to have hot water after the stupid continuous hot water system that didn't know what hot water was.
Keep Safe on the roads and out there.

If you leave it dry the anode cant do its job, it is a sacrafisal anode designed to be sacaficed to save the rest of the metal of the holding tank, cheaper to replace an anode every year than replace a heater every couple

If it's dry the anode will not deteriorate because there will be no electrolysis. So don't worry. The anode is only required when there is water in the tank.

The same advice everywhere...
Always keep the Suburban tank full and run it periodically.
Same advice regarding aircons...run periodically.
