Steer clear of Coorow W.A.

having recently had the unhappy experience of spending one day in the Coorow Caravan Park, ( around 3 hour's drive North of Perth on the Midlands road On State Route 116

I would like to warn  other travellers to steer clear of this local disgrace,

The Park is in a state of neglect, it looks like no one is looking after it, there is no Caretaker, and they have the cheek to ask people to place $25.00 per day in an honor box, situated in the untidy laundry.

On going to have a shower, I undressed in a very small cubical, turned around to turn on the taps only to find that they had been ripped off the wall,  !!  still wanting a shower, I then went to a second cubical which had taps, turned them on and waited 5 minutes for the hot water to arrive, when it finally  arrived the shower was good, except the water ran out of the shower and soaked everything sitting on the floor,

Getting over that, I then decided to use the toilet, "YUK" what a disgrace, the bowl had a brown ring around the water line , so giving that a miss I headed back to our van, on the way I spied an electric hot plate under a small shelter, this was their effort of an free B.B.Q. one look was enough to almost make me Puke, the hot plate hadn't been cleaned in ages, it was covered in old grease,  in which there were flies and bugs, all stuck together.

That was it, we packed up and left this dump behind, swearing never to return, our advice to anyone travelling this highway, if you stop for the night, make it Moora, free overnight stop right outside the local IGA store, or if looking for a good rest area north of Moora, continue through Coorow and pull into the very clean rest area at the next town up the line, which is Carnamah, this place has a large parking area with clean toilets and shade.

I'm just in the process of doing that at present, their office was closed when we stopped there, so I am drafting an email to their Health Inspector.

Looks like the shower is being repaired, the brown ring in the toilet looks like discolouration from the water, the BBQ does look a bit messy.
Did you donate for the use of shower and toilet ?

Did you donate for the use of shower and toilet ?   "Yep" sure did Jeff,  it cost me $25.00 to enjoy getting my shoes soaked in that shower !!!

It could well be water stain from the water, but there are ways to clean it off, not leave it in that condition,

If that shower was being repaired, they could have at least placed an "OUT OF ORDER" sign on the door ???

I've written to the Shire President but no reply as yet,  if I get one I'll be surprised, we'll see.

Yep - seen worse than that - water stain in the toilet - from bore water most likely - shower, who knows? BBQ - heat it up, bit of soap and water, scrub - good as new - they are usually stainless steel, so clean well.

Seems like some people are happy to put up with these conditions, not this little vegemite ,

Paying $25.00 pn; I expected to get something reasonably clean,

The hot plate I mentioned had an old top that looked like teflon , it certainly wasn't  S/steel,

so I think the more it was cleaned, the more things stuck to it.

It is a pity that you can't smell the place Aussie Paul, I think you may change your tune about the looks of it if you could.

I know one thing, I've been in far better and cheaper places than this,

this one camp that I'll never go into again  !!!

Sorry if some comments KJ - but I have seen a lot worse - friends were looking to buy a park, and a couple we visited were just disgusting - one had toilet bowls broken and cracked, leaking water(?????urine??)+) - the floor outside it was soaking and running, first one in the door as well! Wouldn't you think they would clean it up, or lock the door.

Got to thank you for the warning though, we often like to have a night or two in a reasonably priced CP, but always have a good look around first, not being elitist or anything, but check out the permanents - usually get the lay of the land that way.

Hi again KJ - I just went and had a look at Wiki - and the comments - as recently as 3 November 2017, and 23 Oct 2017  - all very positive and complimentary for this whole year - wonder what happened recently?

Hi Jules47,  I can only state what I found as being of a very low standard in my book,

I do wonder if there had been vandals visiting recently, as there is also damage done to much of the outside lighting,

there were lights fitted to Bollards, marking the edge of sites, these have all been run over and smashed.

there were a couple of other vans in the park, these looked like permanents, and not exactly the quietest, they were at one end of the park while we were at the other end, although there were at least 5 bays plus the shower unit separating us, we were still entertained by loud music well into the night.

I am beginning to think that the email to the council to get the facts before you condemn the park may have been a better option.
"we were still entertained by loud music well into the night." Did the loud music sway your judgement, we recently had loud music until 3am in a national park, still a very nice campground, we just happened to be there at the wrong time

They didn't even have the manners to acknowledge  receipt of the email, !!! no

I guess that just proves how much they care for visitors to their town ,

A good place to pass right through and stop further up the track.  biggrin

We stayed at Coorow Caravan Park a week ago. Very clean toilets / showers. The stain in the toilets is from the water and not through being unclean. Well equipped laundry. The Electric barbecue provided is not big but usable. Powered sight $25 per night. Bonus was from July 1 till end of September, if you pay for 1 night get the second one free. ( We happily used this offer). Would recommend this park to anyone needing a stopover. There is no caretaker as its run by the shire who sends someone out to the park each day. Would definitely stay again!

G'day Deedon,   Welcome to the Forum,   It sure sounds like they may have taken notice of the Email I sent to their Mayor,

It's great to hear that things have improved there since our rather unpleasant visit.

Could you tell me if they have made the shower cubicles any bigger ?  can you now dry yourself in the cubical without having to stand in water from the shower ?

We knew of the extra free night which is supposed to attract visitors for the Wildflower Season, are there any Wildflowers showing anywhere around there at the moment ?

Cheers  K.J.

Hi K.J, We didn't use the showers at the park as we have our own in our van, but I did look at them. There is no hob as such to separate the shower from the dressing area. This would make it hard to stay dry while dressing as the whole floor in there is the same level. As for the wildflowers we didn't see any. Maybe a touch early.
