WiFi i.l.o. TV

Anyone using their Android or iPad tethered to their mobile phone to watch TV?

We nearly always have mobile phone reception but TV can be very iffy when vanning. Been trying out TENPLAY, YAHOO7 etc. at home on my iPad and Android devices thru my NBN. Been using a freebie TelstraTV box on the TV to watch stuff for the last 12 months rather than record it ourselves. Doesn't make much of an impact on my NBN allowance but it may on my mobile. Wife is watching a show on an Android Tablet as I write this to see how it may go in the van. Will try tomorrow with the Android tethered thru the phone rather than my NBN connection.

Hi Rusty, I watch some TV programs through SBS and others app, through Wifi and find it uses a lot of data so now wait until near the end of my billing cycle. TV 'live' would be no different.

AFL and NRL are unmetered on Telstra post-paid plans, as is Foxtel on Demand I think. There used to be a bunch of unmetered stuff but I'm out of touch because I don't bother much when touring. Catch-up TV and streaming services are easily achieved but chew a serious amount of data.

I use my IPad to watch the AFL and at this stage there was no charge for data courtesy of Telstra.

I have Netflix and generally do the same as Dougwe and that is keep an eye on my standard usage and watch streamed programms near the end of the charge period at the same time ensuring that I dont go over my limit.

I wonder in my lifetime will there ever be a provider that supplies quality internet for anyone who is travelling almost permanently at a reasonable price and with a reasonable content allowance..

Sort of. As telcos up their capacity, higher definition transmissions (read more capacity required)  appear and vice versa. It's a case of catchup all the time. This week Telstra was forced by competition to up the capacity of a few plans.

Bloody Telstra.    And that comes from a rusted on Telstra customer shareholder & long time ex-employee.

The just 'reached out'  (what b'****e) to tell me that they were cancelling my $20 bundle discount on my home bundle.  But were giving me unlimited usage.  I don't use more than 20gig/mth on my current 400gig allowance.

I can tell you and I'll be 'reaching out' to tell them that once NBN get their act together & I am forced to go NBN in about 12 mths, I will be seriously looking at other providers.

In the meantime I will recoup $15 of the $20 loss by cancelling their useless Platinum product.

WRT mobile data usage, I have been using Dick Smith/Kogan/Vodaphone 'special offers' where big ish prepaid data allowances are offered at a peppercorn cost.  Worth a look if you can live with their restricted network.    We use very little of that data too.

 Thanks Peter.

Yes I am a Alumni member, but the 10% doesn't apply to discounted bundles.

It may now that the bundle discount has been removed.  It seems that you can get only one discount.  I'll try on monday.  In fact I will send them an eMail right now.

I do go to several subsidised functions & on the rare occasion that we have an issue with a Telstra service I use the special support contact.  It works well for me & whole Family.

Looking at our last trip, and using the Freeview app, it appears to use around 500 MB of data per hour.
That's with the default settings, so you may be able to turn down the quality a bit and save some data?

GC re (Yes I am a Alumni member, but the 10% doesn't apply to discounted bundles. ) Me Ditto.

Will look at Telstra NBN offering with free line rental and calls and after their lowest price will bring in the Alumni membership.

Just checked out my iPhone speed both thru my NBN and direct. NBN 23.4 / 4.8 (25/5 plan). iPhone 43 / 10.7 (all speed Mbps). No idea what the phone is rated at. (ookla - www.speedtest.net).

Now I just need to do what W & P did and measure an hours worth of iPhone/iPad usage. We have 30GB (30,000MB) per month of data so at 500MB / hour we are looking at 60 hours per month.
