I guess you question is a little bit like how long is a piece of string. hmm

The average cost per day living expenses is completely dependent on how you choose to live and travel.

My costs are very low. When out on the road, I travel short distances between camps, camp away from the grid 95% of the time, rarely eat out or have take-away and boring non-smoker, non-drinker.

My observation is that I can control my spending on fuel - low on funds ... stay camped for longer at a spot.

I can control my expenditure on accommodation - low on funds ... stay camped for longer away from the grid.

NOW - if I could only stop eating, I would be a millionaire

Having said all that, I live on about $24,000 per year - covers everything ... fuel, accommodation, food, service for vehicle, insurances, regos, clothing, and some saved for those damned unforeseen things. I do have a 'back-up' account but thankfully, I haven't needed to draw on it over the past eight years (yet hmm )

There are some I have met who travel and have difficulty travelling part-time for four or so months a year (maintaining a fixed home address) ... they struggle on $40,000/annum.

[edit: I have attached a spreadsheet I bumped into a few years ago that you may find helpful. Populate it with the amounts you know (or anticipate) you would need to meet your particular lifestyle and see how it comes out. You can change the figures as you re-think it.]

As John (Rocky Lizard) above has said, we are all different, so we will all have different cost

For me as a part time traveller, who always returns to home base, in between each trip, and mainly stops at the free or low cost donation camps

I budget for an extra 20% for food, and an extra 50% in diesel, than what I would normally pay in my home base town, which is the second largest regional centre in WA

I guess that we are a little bit lucky. We just love free / bush camping on our travels.

I think our last long trip of around 8 weeks was from Brisbane to Longreach / Winton / Muttaburra and towns in between. Our accommodation was around $600 for the trip.
For example, of course, we spent 6 days in Roma Q. at $25 per night at the Gun Club, which equated to $150 of the total. Being an ex-Romaite, we had a lot to catch up on with friends and relatives.
As for other expenses. one needs food plus other essentials.
As for fuel. without fuel, we go nowhere, and that is not what caravanning is all about.
Fees were for those campsites that charge, plus our donations at other campsites.
