Coming over to Oz for 3 months at the end of the month, and traveling up from Sydney to Cooktown on my own. Hope to meet up with a few of you guys on the way up or back. Any tips you got for traveling safely alone would be most welcome.

Hello Pete,

Australia is still a very safe place to travel, although in saying that you do have to have caution.

If something does not feel right, then it's probably not, so act accordingly. 

Most travelers are friendly and will help you out if you need it.

Manners and politeness  go a long way - both ways.

Always leave your campsite neat and tidy and pick up any rubbish you may find lying around.

Have a safe and good time and let us know how you are getting on or any questions you may have.

Try not to travel after dark or early morning as there is a lot of wildlife around at this time.

Hi Pete,

Everything Helen said plus get a smartphone using the Telstra network (best coverage) and buy the Wikicamps app - it's about $8 but well worth it.

Hi from another newbie. So much to learn before we can get travelling! Hoping that some of it can be learned as we go, and 'how stuff works' in an RV will become clearer the more I do. The whole electrical/solar 12v 240v What runs from what and when (and sometimes how) is a bit of a challenge for me on my Iveco Esperance. Yes, I've read the instructions...clear as mud. Staying local to start with until I get the hang of it.

Hi Ganny otg - head out to some of the popular nomad camp spots not too far from you - Ellenborough Reserve, 60k w of Port Macquarie for one - talk to others with motorhomes, may even meet an Esperance owner who may be able to explain a few things to you.

I do know that if the switch on the wall is the same as in your home, it works on 240v (plugged into power or generator).

Thanks Jules, Had my first hands-on trip at Lake Macquarie. Met some great people who've been travelling for 10 years and learned a lot.
