GQ Patrol Oil Leak


I suppose that this is just an update on my long history of a slight oil leak/weep from the GQ Patrol's rear passenger side wheel. (1995 Nissan Patrol TB42 EFI - GQ).  It has done no beach or off road and very rarely even dirt roads.

Way back in time a bit after I got the GQ at 50,000 it developed a slight oil leak ... at about 80,000km.

The first mechanic replaced the inner & outer oil seals which necessitated the replacement of the bearing.  He had a specialist workshop check the axle for true also.

At a service to the brakes at about 150,000k ..  the ex Country Mechanic who owned the workshop, told me that he had noticed the leak again & fixed it at no charge.  I think that he replaced the inner seal. A simple 30 minute job.

Bloody leak back again at around 200,000 & a 4WD Specialist who did a complete overhall of the vehicle for me once again replaced the both seals & bearing.  Said that he was going to fit a sleeve if necessary (but didn't).

At 260,000km its back again.

This time (last week) I sought out a highly recommended 4WD Specialist who also specialises in Patrols and gave him the history.  He checked out all the usual suspects like blocked breather etc and finally found that the axle had been machined to just below specs, perhaps to get rid of a groove. I suspect that this was done at the original fix at 80,000km. 

He got a selected 2nd hand axle for $140 with a good bearing & outer seal and repacked the bearing using a special needle greasing tool.  Also took out the other side axle to check the complete housing for trueness.  BTW he said the he often gets GQs in with more than twice the KM of mine with perfect bearings & seals.

At a reasonable $440 later he assures me it is fixed this time & guarantees his work.

 

Perhaps after my next long trip I'll find out if its fixed this time.  As a bonus I will have found a good & reasonably priced mechanic.

Perhaps time to do it again if this latest fix doesn't work.

BTW.. I got a full electronic GQ workshop manual for free thru them.

Usually a Speedy sleeve fixās these issues ? But if itās been machined thereās possibly no sleeve thatāll fit properly .

 Yes.  My latest mechanic said that he often fits sleeves to imported boat trailer axles.  He is close to the bay so gets lots of that sort of business.  Reckons that the Chinese trailers with inferior steel gives him lots of business.  He doesn't use speedy sleeves. He claims to have a superior product that he fits with heating & liquid nitrogen to expand & shrink and machines the sleeve where appropriate.

I think that his main business comes from fitting turbos & tuning big boys toys.

very interesting post My GQ is in the doctors at the moment for a diff rebuild..It also has a weepy gutter side seal and it was replaced about 30k ago..May get mechanic to check some before re install Thanks Team.

 The rear wheel bearings have two oil seals.

The inner is easily replaced, in my case by sliding out the axle assembly.  There are different axel assemblies of course.

But the outer one requires the bearing to be pressed off .. This destroys the bearing it seems.  Circa $200 for a replacement kit.

 

Mine seems OK after 300km, but that's too early to claim success.

Pity that you are in Adelaide.  A bit far to my guy in Brisbane.

Nitriding trailer axes is fine . Not too sure I would do it to 4WD axle though . Heat etc .
