Sat dish - Foxtel - Internet

Hi Folks ... my first post so please be gentle.

Im considering getting a sat dish (roof mounted). I have a Smart TV in the van but also want Foxtel for the footy season. Who do I talk to Foxtel, Telstra or Sat dish company to set up the Foxtel and how much is it per month. Also, with a sat dish will this help with Internet data. I presently have an RV Wifi with Telstra prepaid data - about 50 somethings (GB or MB) per month. What is the optimum setup for Fox, Internet, Tv as we travel round Aus.

G'day Timbo57

I hope you have a home address. Foxtel will only allow a subscription and installation to a fixed address.

Ok assuming that is done you will most likely have an "IQ3" foxtel satellite decoder. DO NOT tell foxtel you want to take it on the road with you. they will dump you quick smart.

to be able to take this with you on the road you will need either a dish installed on the roof of your RV or a portable dish on a tripod. There are advantages to both but the roof mounted unit is going to cost a couple thousand.

A portable dish on a tripod has many advantages and I have been using one for 15 or so years with no issues. I will discuss this later in this post.

A couple of very reputable companies that supply us caravanners/Rv'ers are www.satplus.com.au & accessantennas.com.au

These two companies are known to supply good quality eqipment and components and also excellent after sales support and service. Please, for your own peace of mind do not deal with anyone else cause we know it can be painful.

I previously mentioned a portable dish on a tripod. I use this because it gives me an option to park in the shade and place my dish out where I have a clear shot at the satellite. A couple of pegs and it won't blow over in the wind. Some sites have lots of trees and to be able to place the dish where it gets a good signal means mrs KFT is happy(extremely important).

Also important is a digital satellite meter like the clearsat 3240. it is important to be able to aim the dish for maximum signal strength and this meter is worth the money to ensure you can do that.

These systems are receive only and will not assist with internet which is transmitted from a different satellite.

I hope this helps you make a decision.

Frank

I was told by a TV tech there is a way around the Satellite internet access.

One.

You need an address where there will be or has no NBN access.  Get a Satellite system for the home from the Skymuster suppliers in that area and do the same as the Foxtel thing.

Once it's installed use the LBN and a portable dish and box, take it on the road with you without telling anyone.

We got a second foxtel box and had it installed in our motorhome, it is more trouble than its worth the extra to have 2 sets. Unless you have it on all day or on standby, which is impossible when free camping, we have to ring telstra all the time to have it reconnected. It was, or we thought so, easier to pay the extra to have a second one than dealing with connecting/unconnecting every time we headed off somewhere,, so any one out there with foxtel on board, please help with this one. Once it's connected everything comes up for all the channels programmes, but that's as far as we get, and error code is 117 I think, looked it up and its says you need to connect, hence why we have to ring them, so if someone has any ideas on this, you help would be much appreciated, otherwise we are sending it back. Thanks in advance

I have been thinking of installing an automatic push the button and away you go sat dish.

We have foxtel IQii at home already. I am thinking of getting a standard 2nd foxtel box, no internet required, so we can travel with it.

Questions..
1. Do a need a vast box as we won't be travelling all the time, mainly 10 day trips or so from Townsville.
2. Is the TV that have the vast box worth it or do i just get a vast box?
3. Will the sat dish help with mobile reception.
4. Can I use my home internet whilst travelling?

Cheers Rod

This happens because the box misses the authorization codes sent over the air every couple of hours. You will find that if you connect the box every day or two it usually only takes an hour or so for it to come good again. Security of fox network is the reason it is like this and there is no way around it.

G'day Rod, I will answer the best I can and hope it helps.

Questions..
1. Do a need a vast box as we won't be travelling all the time, mainly 10 day trips or so from Townsville. Only if you wish to watch TV in areas with no reception
2. Is the TV that have the vast box worth it or do i just get a vast box? Depends on 1. above. I have separate box to the TV so if one fails it can be replaced easily
3. Will the sat dish help with mobile reception. NO
4. Can I use my home internet whilst travelling? Only if you have a wireless broadband internet connection.

Thanks KFT for the quick response.

I think I will put the Satellite on hold for a while and get a lithium battery set up first as most of our camping will be free camping or out in remote places where noone will bother us.

Cheers Rod
