I have another thread going where I have been informed that my current vehicle may be able to tow a small van.
My vehicle Hyundai, i30, 2012 hatch, petrol auto, 2L Gvm 1820 Gcm 3020 payload 443 towing braked 1200 ball weight 70 - 75 maybe? Don't really know, should look at manual.
I don't understand the weights properly.
Tare mass is vehicle weight including fluids Atm tare mass plus max payload you can load nto vehicle.
Question:
So say the caravan is 800kg Atm is 1100kg with stuff in it My vehicle can tow 1200kg ( so long as the caravan has its own brakes so that is okay right?
I have seen lighter caravan weights?
The payload is 443kg for the i30.
Is this weight in addition to what I can put in the car as well as what I have put in the van. Or is the 1200kg all the weight I can carry over the car and the caravan?
Probably confused everyone sorry
Any comments welcomed!!!!

Hi Caliban I will try to explain this for you I hope I dont end up making you more confused if you know a truck driver he will be able to explain it to you as you ask questions as well as the deal with weights every day
Gcm = gross combination mass = gros weight of car and trailer combined your figure 3020 , regardless of weather some weight is in the car or in the trailer this total weight can not be exceeded
GVM = gross vehicle weight , that is gross weight of the car including driver and passengers and assorted items in the car plus any weight added to the car by the trailer pull , this weight also must not be exceeded
Your trailer will also have a max weight that must not be exceeded, that weight may also be more than you are allowed with your gcm 3020 so you may not be able to load trailer to its max weight as it would put your gcm overweight .
Tare mass is a somewhat mystical weight as it varies with fuel level ect ect ect , it is however supposed to be the empty weight of the car or trailer some tare weights will not include any fluids some will include fluids you need to read the fine print on these , or best of all fill it with fuel and go get it weighed than add your weight and any passengers weight along with weight you will be putting in the car back seat and boot , tare weights are somewhat irreverent as you will not get booked for being under your gcm or gvm they mearly give you an idea of how much weight you might be able to carry before reaching your max weight ( gvm gcm ) as I said get it weighed your self and know what it weighs
Yes your car may well be able to tow 1200 but, but ,but , that is also influenced by the loaded weight of the car ie you , passenger and other stuff in the car , remember here also that some of that 1200 kg trailer weight will be transferred to the car tow bar and as such becomes part of the car gvm ( as do you and your passenger and other stuff put in the car) this is usually considered as 10% so 120 kg on to your car gvm , here you also need to know how much you can put on the tow bar itself ( and how much weight the car is allowed to have put on the tow bar, you say above 70-75 so this at around 10% would mean only a 750 kg trailer could be safely towed , and how much weight the tow bar is allowed to tow , not all tow bars are allowed to tow the max that the car is allowed to tow .
Over 750 kg a trailer must have brakes
Each axel on the car and trailer will have its own max weight these individual weight can not be exceeded and it is possible that these three axel weights will in fact add up to more than your gcm but ,your gcm is the overall ruling weight not the total of the three axels

I don't understand the weights properly.
The GVM of the i30 1820 means that your tug should not weigh more than 1820 kg when you are driving it.
The GCM of 3020 means that the maximum all up weight of the tug when loaded to its maximum 1820 kg plus the weight on the wheels of the van can not exceed 3020 kg when travelling. GCM means gross combination mass and is the maximum permissible weight of the combination of the van and tug.
The payload of 443 means that the the maximum weight you can put in and on the vehicle is 443 kg. This includes you and the navigator plus the weight of your petrol (less 8 kg,) the ball weight of your van together with the few other things you throw in the tug. (The tare weight of the tug includes 10 litres of fuel which will weigh approx 8 kg.)
The towing braked weight of 1200 kg is the the maximum weight of the van being towed when it is uncoupled from the tug. This is the sum of the weight on the wheels plus the weight on the coupling.
The ball weight is the weight your van imposes on the coupling. When the van is uncoupled the ball weight is part of the total towed weight of the van. When you couple the van to the tug and you are working out the weight of the tug then the ball weight is part of the load carried by the wheels of the tug. If you did not work things that way you would be counting the ball weight twice if you considered it part of the vans weight.
